If you can boot into win 7 pro make the partition active, or If you can't boot into win 7 pro then delete that partition in the win 7 home install.

If you can't get it to boot from the DVD drive, and I've been trying, the disk is kind of useless, don't know how I managed the first time but for blind luck.

If I have no active partitions, how does Windows even work?

Not enough specifics bout the issue to trouble shoot any further. Does the computer boot from win 7 install disc in the DVD drive?

Could still be the dvd drive or cable. Sometimes they work ok and other they may not work.

It's the same SATA, as you pointed out to me earlier...nothing has changed, no cards have been marked, no wires or trick photography.

No lovely assistant to saw in half either.

Well you have to trouble shoot it with these methods:

1: Make sure data and power cables are properly attached.

2: Try different Win 7 disc.

3: if different disc bring same results try different DVD drive.

Explain what happens when you load the win 7 disc and reboot your computer? Does the computer boot from the disc? Does it start set up? if so where is the hang up?

It's been very rainy with potential snow in a couple daze but it may not stick then either.

What IS STICKING is the REINSTALLATION ON THE HP (ALISON)!

Had a friend help me, then I cleaned the disc and we are about to find out if this will work!

WE ARE THERE!

I just need to get the internet going.

(EDIT) DONE, loading updates and tediously lengthy crap.

3 1/2 hours of updating and not just finishing the 142 I chose to install first, including SP1. This is the one painful waiting part of loading... but Alison is returning.

Went through 60 updates and hid the 10 related ones...most of the optional updates I had were pre-10 and fixes for old stuff, even IE 9 stuff.

I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop I am using now since I can't use my regular desktop. It is running Vista Business and seems to get around ok but I would not mind going to Windows 10 for it. It has a fast enough processor 1.83GHz and a 60gig hard drive but I can't find a free download for it. Any advice?

Edit: When I go to the MS website, I see this...

Note: This free Windows 10 upgrade is available for PCs and tablets

So am I SOOL???

1. You need 7 or 8/8.1 to qualify for the upgrade

2. 1.83 GHz is a bit slow/weak really, I don't know about if it's dual core but no, it's probably a bit old...

Vista still does not qualify, you need to upgrade to 7 or 8/8.1 first.

Speaking of Vista, with the SATA connections all messed up and pins broken I decided to try something drastic...ALL IDE.

So I have C: 100 GB Maxtor Diamond MAX and an IDE DVD drive on PRIMARY and SECONDARY and an ULTRA 100 ATA adapter on the board.

We're going to try a clean install of 7.
