Jerry's Gotten-off-butt Yamaha M80 Rebuild Thread

You can mount the caps sideways or up and down? Or maybe hollow out the original caps and make a higher rated cap out of a some of smaller ones? I saw a Sansui or a Pioneer receiver where they did this.

Ok.. gotta put a picture up. See how the caps are horizontal? They are also that wide as well. Overall I don't have much room at all even to stand up "smaller" caps.. but in any case I can't find any 47,000uf's that aren't at least 105mm tall (or in this case, wide/horizontal)

The "wiggle room" I have on the inside is the distance between the top "skinny" circuit board and that tantalum cap. Nooot much! So I have to go the other way, which is out the back panel. It'll look like I got big pistons comin' out of the back end of the amp, which may just look pretty cool! :thumbright:

You can always make a cover on the back. I have some sheet metal I was going to use and changed my mind. I don't have a break ; but I'm sure I can find a 2X4 with a nice rounded edge and a dead blow. Take about an hour.

Dude give me the dimensions and I'll machine it out of whatever if thats what it takes. Larry, you an old fender guy??? know your way around the old sheet metal????

Whats in the way of them protruding out the back?

The hole I gotta make in the back panel (the back panel, itself) . heheh :thumbright:

Ok Jer, just looked like some binding posts were in the way.

Too difficult to move the circuit board in front of them to get more room inside? Or can they be relocated to the front of the cabinet? Looks like there is plenty o space up front. :cyclops:

I suppose there is four of them? Could two stand up in back and suspend two up front? :rabbit:

I have shot my share of rivets and made parts by hand to spec. How ever he wants it done. And yes I know better then chatter a bit on the lathe or mill. Would you like me to port your heads with a flow bench. I learned a few things in this thing we call life. LOL

Ah Larry, you're a kick Bud, whether we have anything to show or not we should go to the CES, course that means you leaving the house.

I vote for that! Badass! Some of the early 60's tube amps had them sticking out horizontally thru the back, and the big Aiwa S-99000 cassette deck has the D/A converter sticking out back.

Maybe stencil some Hot Rod flames on the caps sticking out :whax:
