    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

You want something like these for this job: search for minigrabber test leads. Many places sell them.

If you have any sort of amplifier, that will do for this. You don't need much power. A set of computer speakers pulled apart to access the speaker connections is probably sufficient, or anything that can make sound.

right, but thats not quite a stock PL 400 :) I expect that has to do more with the current handling capacity of newer output devices than anything else though. The heat is definitely a factor too, and it will get much hotter the more current you draw. Of course the lower the impedance of the...

I believe the PL are rated to 4 ohm only. Here's a service bulletin about it, http://home.earthlink.net/~dimlay/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/Infinityspeakers.pdf

Those aren't one of the Infinity models that blow up Phase Linear amps is it ? I know there is some model that has a really ugly impedance curve that goes basically to a short circuit at points.

Suspended turntables = win. Unless you have shitty flooring like I do, then you need a wall shelf.

Derek92994's 700 Ser II White Oak conversion

Caps can fail from age. I don't like using old ones. I figure if I'm replacing old caps, there is no good reason to install different old caps. Thats like replacing bald tires with a different brand of bald tire.

I get them from Mouser, and they didn't cost all that much. No real need to change out the fuse holders. Not sure where the $42 figure comes from but if you're ordering parts anyway you may as well toss them in with it. Order extras. If the preamp didn't burn it's fuse there shouldn't be...

With 122vac from the wall, I get 11.8 vac to the meter boards.

D106 and D107 have a 390 ohm resistor across them. D206 and D207 are the same. You will show some reading both directions in circuit. It shows a difference, and it doesn't show shorted. I'd call that OK.

I can measure mine if you let me know what exactly you need measured. I expect the Pro transformer voltage output should be the same as a Series II. It uses the same PL37 display board at any rate.

    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

The original board can be repaired if there are bad parts on it. I rebuilt one for a friend, and I've done a little service work on my own. If it doesn't look like someone took a blowtorch to it, its not that big of an issue if you just need a couple parts. If it seems like everything is...

The other handy thing about op-amps is that they rarely go bad unless you zap them with too much voltage. if the zener diodes didn't go open circuit, chances are good that the ops are fine too.

definitely not. We want parts that work and are reliable. Those bumblebees are horrible capacitors. I haven't found one yet that wasn't leaky and most are also off value by a fair margin. Ceramic caps or film caps would be fine across the bridge.

    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

The op-amps are the two small black chips towards the top of the board, each has 8 legs. It stands for operational amplifier. Its basically a small nearly complete amplifier circuit in a handy-dandy package. Add a few external parts depending on what you need it to do, and off you go.

    The Election!!!

I do drink bottled water. My well is terrible. Not honestly sure if you're trolling or not here. Are you telling me you believe that the folks in DC are actually doing a good job, and have been elected on their relative lack of BS ? I'm really just curious if you honestly disagree with...

barely in spec, but in spec. Its 10%, which allows up to 8250 ohms before being out. You're right at the top end of that range. If you're putting in an order, I'd stick a pair of resistors on the order. They're cheap. Not doing it won't likely hurt anything though.

Any Ford Master Mechanics on here

I have a second and a third. Its far too convenient to be able to have a vehicle broken, or drop it off for tires or whatever sort of thing you need to have done and not need to worry about getting to work the next day.

    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

Check the 7.5k resistors on the driver board. Those are the two dark brown ones. The ones on my 700 and my friend's were both far off spec. All the rest of the resistors on mine were fine, many of his were off value and one or two were open. I have no idea if his were off value because of...
