    New toy! PL 4000/II preamp!

I rebuilt a Series 1 4000 for a friend. That thing had more broken solder joints in it than any single piece of equipment I've seen before. The only thing I couldn't get quite right on his was the peak unlimiter. it worked, but it had a noisy part that I never bothered to trace down. The...

    Stylus points with less-than-perfect records

are there cheap generic nails for the Ortofon that aren't terrible? I generally play whatever on whatever but if its something I worry over I use the $15 generic on my Shure M93E. I've spent more on bad lunches before, so if that got damaged it wouldn't make me cry. I'd just buy another and...

Przem's Phase Linear 700 Series II White Oak Conversion

There is a certain something about a decent tube amp though. They have the magic ability to be musical without being fatiguing at all.

    David's Phase Linear 700B Thread

220k is a bit high. If you've got a bunch of them, you could make a big parallel lump to drop that down. Probably anything in the 1k-10k range would be acceptable though. 105v on the rail sounds right. I only asked because I happened to notice that sticker. I've spent so much time chasing...

    David's Phase Linear 700B Thread

That power supply is not actaully a 220v supply is it ? if you're feeding 120v into a Euro-spec power supply its running at half the normal voltage. That will make it do silly things. A quick check of the rail voltage will tell the story. From ground buss to either cap terminal should be + or...

    OK,time to get serious now.......

Do you have to use the backplane boards with a WO driver board? Couldn't he make it full comp using the original style wiring and just connect that to the new driver board and keep the original chassis and such ?

Thermally Conductive Insulator Pads for TO-3 Transistors

Hmm, here I thought the mica with the grease was the way to go. Pretty sure I've seen a TSB from Phase Linear about using mica instead of silicone because it causes oscillation problems or something.

Phase Linear (Lynnwood Washington) Factory Photos

Any further details on what this amp was? It looks a whole lot like my Pro 700 faceplate, same Phase Linear font and color, level knobs, etc. Some of the answers on the test I get, some just baffle me. Here's what I've got so far. 1) sandbox (actually I didn't get that, Lee did) 2) Man...

Phase Linear 700B with Black Rack handles??

Interesting info. Were the black face units custom jobs from the factory for certain folks only then? I'm just curious why they were never offered that way from the factory. Oddly enough, it makes them look about 10 years newer than they actually are. I like it personally.

    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

the other thing thats a problem is eventually you'll lift the traces if you install and remove things too many times. Once that happens, its a mess to fix. I've done it, but its not pretty.

    Question for joe

A 5AR4 is rated to deliver 825 ma steady-state current. I'd be surprised if both tubes combined in that preamp needed more than 60 ma. its like using an 18 wheeler battery to start your lawnmower. It might do it, and it won't hurt anything but its just more than you really need for that job...

    Glen's 700 series II build

The backplanes get trimmed because the inside of the -II chassis is a smidge smaller than the B ? Nice to know if I ever get motivated to convert mine over.

    Question for joe

Is that an octal base rectifier? If it is, I'll guess 5Y3GT or a 5AR4. Both are grossly overkill for a pair of tubes in a preamp.

    Question for joe

Honestly you don't get a lot out of a tube rectifier vs solid state. It does bring plate voltage up slower, but thats really about it. You won't get any switching noise like you get out of solid state diodes but that can be easily eliminated with small capacitors across an SS diode. If you've...

    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

Measure those resistors to see if they are close. Unless I'm having a dummy moment, you should see 6 ohms across the pair of them.

    HELP! Rescuing Dad's old PL400 S2 (pics)

If its humming, its drawing current and that will make the bulb light. Usually hums are flaky cables, but it might be a problem with the preamp. Try turning the level knobs all the way down on the PL 400 to see if it stops making noise. if thats quiet, then the problem is outside of the...
