Further upgrading my first built WOPL, a 400 S1 8 fin, with a few goodies.

Been thinking about Joe's suggestion of moving the meter signal wires from the backplanes to the DCP. I like it as it gets the last of those soldered 22 AWG wires off the backplane and just makes good common sense. The amps capacitors will be charged before signal is put to the meters, per the DCP delay. Pretty sure I have some miniature ring terminals, but will have to dig and look.

i heard from joe about the remaining things i needed to accompany the wopl kit....he included the bigger rectifier....so these pics are perfectly timed...
i have a great feeling that it is all about to be shipped!!!!
i am so looking forward to this...

now i understand snubber caps....joe included those also...
i think i will tell him to double the extra wire....just in case...
Double ordering the wire is a excellent idea. It takes more than one would think, and those longer runs are longer than they look. It's a real bummer to need a single long piece and you only have short cut offs left. Or, the wrong color or AWG.
I go overkill and use 14 AWG for the AC runs, but 16 AWG is more than adequate and easier to work with. The rest of the wiring is 16 or 22 AWG. And it's good to follow a color scheme.

When I rewire the meter signal wires to the DCP, I'll probably use 2 pieces of 22 AWG grey with a bold red stripe since I have a lot of it and haven't used it elsewhere in the amp. These get soldered to the LED board, and I'll use a short piece of red heat shrink at the soldered on ring terminal to denote the right channel and black for the left.

from what i can see in the photos and documentations....i can not help but agree....
even doubles my desire for an old one and a modern one....400 that is...
i have a bid on one now....it is a 4 fin...but, i dont care....its going to be gutted anyway....
one member has said that all of the fin business was a selling point and not much physical value...
i do run my amps at about half power....most of the time....most every day....
if need be...i can put a fan like what sniff recommends....
....the sx runs very hot too....both are in front of a big window...that i must remember to close the vertical blinds or it really gets hot....
just got the paid invoice notice from ebay....lol

This coming Monday I'll have the house to myself, so I'll put the S1 in the big system driving the JBL Millenniums hard for a hour or so to stress test it. I have one of the infra red temperature guns and I'll shoot the temps of the transformer, chassis, and heat sinks. The transformer gets pretty warm, but no where close to hot, followed by the chassis vents on top. The heat sink just gets a little warm.
I once considered drilling cooling hole in the covers, but the guys quickly got me straight. Those vents are designed to hold a certain amount of heat inside the chassis for the temp dependant bias transistor to work correctly.
So when you build the kit, follow exactly the instructions on mounting the bias transistor stud and spacer that transfers heat to the P clamp.

If you are bidding on a 4 fin unit, I hope you asked for pictures of what is inside it. If it has the meter fuse lamps, you are screwed...

My Bench Mule PL400 is a four fin unit (what better use for it?). Mine has the Jewell meters and the WOA LED light board was the first thing I installed. The meters are much easier to see now.
my first purchase was a 4 fin...before i knew the difference....it had the old 400c driver board...but dixon meters...i put in wo capacitor upgrade and the led light kit for the meters....looks very nice....i just ordered the whole kit and kaboodle from white oak...but, i am looking for another 400 ....
i still want a stock 400 and a wopl....
bench mule...i like that!!!....would love to see a pic...
lol....

Hello Gene
The light board won't work with the meters in those amps. You want to have any 4 fin owner take the top lid off and send you a photo of the innards before you plunk down any money. Also will reiterate, there are too many fish in the sea. You saw that recent $200 BIN PL400 offering. That is living proof that if you are patient, you can get the best version of the PL400 amp rather than settle. Like that line often used these days "the best version of yourself"

The other line I use often is, "these things have been around over 45 years, what's the rush?" :)
