Look how Marks routed wiring under the DCP and film caps across the storage caps. Cool. Tell and show all please!

Joe, have a question I meant to ask long ago, maybe I did, can't remember. So here goes.
On the 400 DCP protect board, there are 3 ground wires from the buss bar. One for each channel and another.
I have all three routed in the DC bundle across the bottom. But got to thinking, are these really DC grounds? If the amps proper output is AC, then each channels "ground" wire is really a AC wire and should be routed across the top in the AC bundle. Correct? I'll have to look at that 3rd "ground" wire connection and the board to see if it's DC or AC.
Hope I'm making sense. Route these "grounds" with the AC or DC bundle? Thanks.

Couple of thoughts about this.
  • Yes, there is AC current running through these ground wires but no AC voltage (they are ground potential). Weak magnetic coupling may result but negligible capacitive coupling will result.
  • Any current running through these wires is synchronous with the signal being output by the amplifier, thus not noticeable/perceptible.
  • 60 Hz AC wiring carries both AC voltage and current potential in them, creates the opportunity for capacitive and inductive coupling. The 60 Hz AC wiring carries a signal totally asynchronous to any musical signal you are amplifying. What does this community complain about the loudest? Hum.
  • The wires connecting the backplane to the control board are at right angles to the ground wire lay across the bottom of the amp chassis, the ideal situation.

The perfect answer is no where near anything else like the 2 yellow output wires should fly in space, isolated by distance from anything else. That is true of any wire in the amp but we would not be very pleased with our amp cosmetics.

Got it. Thank you! They're staying where they are. Away from the AC wire to the DCP and the flying yellow wires. The amp was totally silent before and after the the "continuous improvement" ground wire modification to control board terminals 5L and 5R. This weekend I'll see if it remains so after the further work I outlined in this thread. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

I like those "open frame" or whatever they're called builds. Seen some pretty slick ones advertised over the years.

I used the .047uF Wima film caps across the main caps because I saw this technique used in my (dead quiet) Hafler 220 amp and thought it was a good idea to suppress any RF signals or harmonics of the 60Hz power. When the WOA Backplanes came along, Joe informed me the film caps were no longer necessary because he had added caps to the Backplane Boards. So this amp was wired pre-Backplanes, and I never took the film caps out.

Ahhh, that explains it. Was wondering what the EXTRA film caps were for.
I've been seeing Hafler parts show up on the Bay, was just looking at a CTS selector switch noted as Hafler and maybe NOS.

Now days, I cannot keep up with the various formats and architectures. I think we are in Generation 12 with Intel?
i9-12900K what the heck is that??? LGA 1700 socket what???
Z690 chipset???

So many compatibility issues.
If you could recommend the parts that would work together, that you would buy - that would be great.

Caps placed away from the load they serve are of very limited value when they are small value like film caps. They need to be placed right where the action is. A short run of wire has pretty amazing inductance.
