ke4mcl sent me this Rotel RD-1000 that is heavy like a tank, well-built but doesn't play, although it will FF and REW-the counter doesn't budge regardless which gives me an idea of what is the matter.

I bought the Pioneer CT-F650, unexpectedly. I responded to an ad for an Akai GX-F31 cassette deck being sold. When I arrived to buy the Akai for $30 (with original operating manual) from the original owner, and he knew I was into Pioneer he threw in the CT-F650 for an additional $30. He had just bought a Pioneer Elite dual deck, a CT-07D, and wasn't needing his old deck any longer. He hand-built the wood case for it, as he is hobby woodworker. He did a nice job on it. So, I can't take credit for anything done on the 650, except for keeping the deck serviced.

I think it was here in this thread that I stated that I had an R2R deck, well it was my wife's R2R, and I stated that I wasn't sure if it worked. Well, I was still sent a reel of tape last Christmas by the kind folks on this forum. Yesterday, I FINALLY dragged the R2R out of the closet - a Sony about 35 years old. I had to jury-rig a power cord, it powered up, OK so far. I put that tape on, with tape trying to unloop off the spool, and I remembered all the reasons why I got rid of my Wollensak R2R years ago... The capstan spins, the reel drives work OK in all modes, but the pinch roller will not come up, and neither will the little pads which hold the tape to the heads. I can't change the speed, either.

I'm going to examine the entrails, and if it's not an easy fix, it's bye, bye. There is a better Pioneer for sale at a local shop for $45, and either way, it's hardly worth it for one tape.

Chances are that I'll be giving the tape away for free in the "For Sale" sub-forum...

OK, I'll probably be sending the tape back. Just post me a ship-to address, as I tossed the packaging a long time ago.

The deck is a Sony Stereo 530, and I have a feeling that the only things I'll be able to salvage will be the reel hubs...

That is a TC-530 and Hifiengine has the SM. I know a friend who serviced his 630, a sister.

Chat has worked perfectly for me since it was restored recently (in there now talking to myself).
Micro$oft's motto should be "we make it look pretty and use as many cpu cycles as possible passing junk code through so our hardware buddies can make big money!" Windows 8 looks like a scrabble tile game and dont get me started on touch screens, i'd rather a keyboard/mouse anyday.

Derek, the chat routine is either a vBulletin addon or one that integrates with it. Microsoft has little to do with it because it's something like Linux or php based.

I was a member of that club too! Panasonic's were built like tanks back then..

Picked up a few of them in recent years for nostalgia sake; gave one to my son which he still uses today and have another one - NIB - in the collection closet for posterity.

Yup, mine was similar to the one you've shown, Tony. But, I am sure the piano keys on my old one had coloured buttons to denote play and record. It's amazing I would even remember a detail like that.

Lazarus, i had the same problem with my Teac X-10R reel to reel, rollers/mechanism would not come up properly. I got into the back of it and lightly oiled the contact points, then worked the mechanism by hand many times until it freed up. Now it functions great, its usually old sticky grease that causes this.

Thanks for the tip! This deck is 47 years old, so gummy grease is very likely. I suppose I'll find out as soon as I crack the case open...

Sony SLV-575UC

What's a Hi-Fi VHS recorder doing within the Tape section? I may try recording audio in this format. I used to do it, successfully, in the 90's. Member, derek92994, is inspiring me to give it another go. His preferred format is Beta, and I may try that out, as well.

I cleaned all the innards, and I might have the gumption to try a recording this week, once I patch the Sony SLV-575UC into my system.
