What First RTR should one get?

i was right about the Sansui being sleeper of the year, put it through its' paces yet? Load test?
 
Hi Robert,

Every time I try to keep things on the straight and narrow, your thread veers off. I've been guilty of it, myself, but I am getting better at keeping to point. I think powder-coating would be indestructible as a finish and you could more easily colour match to your deck.

As far as the Pioneer turntable, if it had this cartridge/stylus you would be ready to put your Sansui QRX-7500 to the test.

The Sansui is back together, looks and works much better than it did a few days ago. I also stripped and refinished the case while I was messing with it. Have not given it a full load test as I am not sure where all those load resistors are could only find a couple of them. Hooked it up in the shop where I had the Pioneer SX850, all is good so far... :D

Started on the TEAC last night as well. Removed the back panels and cleaned goo for a couple hours. Cleaned all the switches and pots, replaced the counter belt as it had turned to glue. BTW, I found that WD40 on a Q-tip works great for removing that black, sticky belt remains. Hopefully today I can get the front panel in shape and give it a try. Will give FF a call mid-day to see if I can stop by and get a tape.

Dug the PL-518 turntable out of the box and think with a little work it should be good to go. The rubber on the shock mounted feet has gone bad so will need to do something there. I don't believe the stylus is the one in Nando's ad, but if I remember right it was one of their better ones. It looks like the metal tab with lifts and lowers the tonearm is not right (maybe bent a little). The plater spins and the speed control works.... Think I'll get a photo and start an new thread on this so we have someplace else to hide our ramblings. :P

Lee, I will get the CD-3 opened up shortly..... The bench has some room now that the Sansui is together. I need more benches and some shelves for all the gems!

Robert I use my freezer for my 3rd bench. LOL On my real work bench. I have 3 cassette decks and a CDP. On my middle table I have a CDP and a cassette deck. On the freezer I have 2 cassette decks. I have to get my stuff organized soon.

Larry, to me any flat surface is a bench except for the mill and the jointer! It use to also be the table saw, but lately that one is not winning the battle. One can never have enough benches...... Don't have a freezer so that idea won't work here. :(

Should we have a thread on your 'Build a Great Cassette Deck' idea?????

Sure why not. No one has done a tube deck. That is for sure. We did have ideas in another forum. But I can't get there from here. LOL Go ahead and see what happens.

Here is a photo of the TEAC 7300 back together and I believe FF told me these are some of Larry's reels. Drove over and chatted with FF this afternoon then came home with some garage sale bargains ( A couple nice metal reels, a half dozen once played Maxell tapes, some blank reels, and same cassettes). At the moment all is working after a last minute repair to one of the tape lifts which was froze in-place.

Thanks Lee..... It sounds pretty darn good, and certainly looks much better than it did just a few days ago. I am going to have to get more speakers though, always something..... ;)

Nice equipment Robert,,That 7300 R2R is quite different from my 6300 but I,m glad it still maintains those great looking VUs
 
Robert, your Teac A-7300 and Sansui QRX-7500 cleaned up fabulously. When you see the backlighting on the Sansui you just want to use the receiver even more often. I wonder what is recorded on those reels Robert helped you with. Probably, rockabilly!

Thanks Nando..... Yeah, some people tell me I am always in the dark. Ha, now I have cool lights to find my way! Agree on the Sansui in the dark, I could just sit and look at it for hours. These spinning reels are very cool as well.... I need to build some new shelves ASAP. FF had some nice shelves that I am going to copy the concept from.

Hi All,

Looks like the TEAC needs a bit more tending to. :cry: There is a Wow and Flutter issue which is not improving with use, so much for that thought. Now where is that service manual.........

Man, those big reels of spinning tape just makes one weak in the knees..... The younger generation just has no clue what they missed!

Update: Back is off once again... It sounds to me like the capstan drive has about a 2 second oscillation of sorts. This is with the deck on, no tape moving, slow speed setting, pitch control off. It one varies the pitch control or changes the speed setting switch the oscillation follows the selected motor speed. Sure wish I had a tach that one could measure the capstan rpm with. This is also occurring with tape movement it just is masked more by the other motors operating.

Looks like success as the TEAC A-7300 has been blasting tunes for the past couple hours. Looks like the issue turned out to be a couple trim pots on the capstan board which would change value when warmed during use. If the problem returns I am going to replace them and be done with it.

At the moment nothing more cool than Buddy Holly tunes coming from big spinning reels!
