What First RTR should one get?

I am slowly learning, have made a few things mostly 2D items thus far.... It's a steep learning curve as there is the 3D CAD program, the CAM program, and then the machine control programs to figure out. Currently have a three axis machine and a 4th axis which I have not had time to mess with.

Nice picks for both the Sansui QRX-7500 and Teac A-7300. Were both components purchased from the same seller? At those prices, I think they are well bought, provided a little service attention can bring them back to proper working order. The Teac has a Direct Drive Capstan Motor, which is a good feature. Sam has experience in this deck. If you have hub adapters for the 10.5" reels you are styling. Any ideas, now that you have a quadraphonic receiver, whether you'll look at quad sources such as a quad cartridge/stylus for your turntable?

Yes, both from the same seller.... He also had a lesser quad Sansui (really ugly model, but it didn't power up correctly) and a Pioneer SX980 but I had run out of cash! I know the receiver needs some attention as the right channel is low and a bit distorted. I rolled the dice and figured it should be something fairly simple (of course everything is once you figure out the magic!). Playing with it before work this morning, has me thinking its a power supply issue as it took some time to recover after doing several quick power cycles. I just downloaded a service manual for the -5500 version which looks identical except for output power. I know another project.......

I saw the deck in the corner so asked about it. It looked in good shape, just dirty from sitting in the corner for years. He fired it up and everything worked so home it came. I figure it will be a good learning deck at a minimum.

Have not thought beyond these at the moment as to the future plan. :)

Off to the printer down the hall before someone finds my service manual......

Hi Larry,

A little.... I am more less figuring it out as I go. Learning to draw, do the CAM stuff, and then take it to the machine and hope all works out. If not it's a repeat and try again but with the step of ordering more tooling bits in the mix. :( Have been messing with all of this a couple years and it is very cool when it all work!

For CAD I have a 3D program called VX (recently bought by ZW3D), a CAM program SprutCam, a machine controller Mach3, and a Tormach milling machine. Took a few machineshop classes back in college days then did not do much until I bought some manual machines about 5-6 years ago.

So many interests, so little time.....

Once you have your Teac performing to your satisfaction, you'll have just as much fun finding take-up reels and accessories to go along with it.

Those are some nice reels! Can't wait to get the tape machine spinning. I am planning to get together with FF on Sunday to get a tape and reel so I can give it a try. It will likely take that long to get the first layer of goo cleaned off, yuck!!! Why do people let such nice stuff get so yuckie?

Another success tonight in that I have the new to me Sansui QRX-7500 right channel issue resolved. There was a bad fuse (deep inside the unit), did a quick check of the current and all appears ok. Not exactly sure why there was any output, guess I'll have to study the schematic sometime to answer that. Now to find a fuse that fits the holder, think I'll try the autoparts store in the morning. A good cleaning, adjust the bias, and this one should be good for a while. If anyone needs a schematic for this model, drop me a note as I found a pdf version and a SM for the QRX-5500 which is similar.

Nando's reel just gave me an idea for a winter project....... I'll bet I could use the CNC to make some very cool reels..... One could do a wide range of slots and engraving.....

Lee, if you want a copy of what I have let me know. I also found a SM copy for the TEAC A7300 and the 112 cassette that I had the motor issue with a few weeks back. Both are pdf's but very readable and nicely done.

Robert if you are looking for a winter project some reel "HUBS" would be a winner. Most are plastic and lose their grip after awhile. Not that that's a deal breaker, but man it's a pain in the butt to to mount reels to the deck when the hub keeps fallin out.

That's a good idea!! They sell those hubs for crazy $'s too...... Mmmmmmmmmm Cripts, now I am sounding like Larry was earlier today! :D
 
I can set you up with a program to do audio face plates. If you want. There was a time in my mind to build a tubed cassette deck. It is still on my mind. Everything has to be drawn. IE cad.
I have no money but I can compensate with toys. LOL

I would be interested in knowing more.....

Ha, I am in the process of converting $'s into toys so when the country goes bust due to the donkey in-charge I'll have something to do..... Better to have toys than worthless money.
