Bumping an old thread again...
I seem to have collected a bunch of carts over the years:
For the Pioneer PL-L1000:
Ortofon Super OM (stylus 30, stylus D25M for microgroove/mono, stylus 78*)
Shure M97Xe
Ortofon Concorde 30 (Haven't used it yet, don't have the correct counterbalance, bought it because I liked the Concorde 20 I bought in '85)
For the Rek-O-Kut CVS-16:
Sanyo MG29 (with .6 mil point= Goldring Elan, with elliptical point= Goldring Elektra, and 3mil point for shellac)
Ortofon Concorde Pro** (for disco/45rpm singles)
Audio- Technica AT13e2
Realistic RXP3 (sounds awful despite being a Shure elliptical point)
(Radial arm on this one, Baerwald alignment.)
For the Glaser-Steers GS77***:
Sanyo MG29 with .6 conical (or optional 3mil for shellac), tracking at ~4g (equivalent to the Goldring Elan). Originally used a Shure M70B, before that an M3D, and before that an Astatic 17D (ceramic).
Unused:
Pickering V-15/ATE4 (needs a new point...)
Grado GF3E
Jelco MC-12
Undetermined Audio-Technica P-mount
History:
An all-time favorite was the Shure V15 Series III. For grins, I tracked an LP at 1/4g with this sucker- and it worked well until it hit the inner grooves (Dual 1229Q)
Audio-Technica AT440MLa was a bit on the bright side, included it in a give-away of a Harman/Kardon ST-7
ADC XLM MKIII
Micro-Acoustics MA2002 for my first linear tracker. OUTSTANDING cart!
*I originally bought the Ortofon Super OM for the Rek-O-Kut because of the 78RPM ability, bought all three stylus sizes to accommodate just about any record I could throw at it. With use, I judged that the Super OM was a better match for the Pioneer, looking for another Ortofon body to make use of the 78 stylus on the R-O-K. For now, the Sanyo (Goldring knockoff) with a 3mil point excels with my shellac albums.
**The Concorde Pro is a DJ cart. No overhang adjustment (is 3/8" too long on the PL-L1000, impossible to tweak the offset for Baerwald alignment on the R-O-K). Conical point, OK for 45rpm disco singles or wrecked "flea market" records. Ortofon intended this cart for use with the Technics SL1200, preset geometry.
***Hey! it's a frakkin' record changer! High mass tonearm, impossible to accurately set stylus pressure, VTA changes with each record, and the speed is not accurate- but it's great to watch the sucker go through a stack of 45rpm singles! The cantilever of the MG29 can handle the excessive tracking pressure (~4g or so) without problem, and the 3mil point is perfect for a stack of shellac.
