I think she is starting to look good. The real test is how she sounds though. That is what I am anxious to hear. And how stable she is. That is my main fear after my problems with PL in the 70's. If these are rock solid, I don't think there is an amp out there anywhere at any price that can beat them. Oh, the other amps in the Phas Linear line, like the twin 500, can they be made reliable, or are they a different animal altogether? Just wondering...

And Lee, thanks for all your hard work. I REALLY appreciate all you are doing for me..

Sutton, the main failure , as Joe has shown us is the capacity for the amp to "latch up" on applying power. The positive rail would get routed to the speaker outputs, or an output trannie would fail and do the same thing. Joe has fixed thew first and the DC protect relkays fix the second, plus with the MJ 21194's they can't ever be stressed enough to blow. The SOA on those is way above the old XPL's. The common modes of failures is not even a fraction of what it used to be. STABLE????????? DUDE------LOOK AT THE SQUARE WAVE IN THE JERRY"S 70-0 THREAD!!!! THAT IS A 684 WATT SQUARE WAVE AND IT"S NOT EVEN STARTING TO OVERSHOOT OR DISTORT IN ANY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 400's will be built with the same board version as the 700's. THE EXACT SAME BOARD!!! THE ONL:Y DIFFERENce is the small input coupling cap has to be changed to 120PF instead of 180. You will have a 400 being driven by a PL020 board version, THAT DIDN"T HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE BEFORE.
And I just got an e-mail from Joe, he's been spice modeling the whole PL system and he says he has identified more areas for improvement.
What i find is amazing is Joe has achieved distortion specs in the .005 range WITHOUT THE OUTPUT STAGE B EING COMPLEMENTARY!!

Ok, so we didn't get to the test point last night, real good chance for tonight, raining here so we probably won't work late.

I can't wait, and I sure hope she sounds good, and looks good on the scope. I am very anxious to listen to these amps at extremely loud volume, or at volume levels which will be as close to clipping as I can get without damaging the amp.....the hell with my hearing...

I haven't been able to clip any yet. Won't hurt em though. one of the tests is a "current sharing" for the outputs. You crank the sig generator till it's "well into clipping" then you start turning down the variac to 70% linew voltage. Talk about an output stage squeal!! The output cases actually scream. Doesn't seem to hurt em.

The board is wired in, caps back in, wiring tidied , chassis vacuumed and wd-40'd. The wiring is bundled and routed correctly now.
This particular amp has come a long way since the one-eyed warrior day. Testing tomorrow night. It's ready.

She has (well maybe this one is a he) certainly come a long way, baby! Looks brand spanking new on the inside, but it is!! Hope she (he) sounds as good as she (he) looks on the inside. I'll bet he (she) sounds fabulous once you get her (him) dialed in and set. The other 700B from New York should arrive at your door on Monday. This one should be a lot prettier inside and out on arrival, and will have new caps and rca's, plus you'll be able to see what someone else did to "fix" the amp. Of course one channel is "blown", so I am ery anxious to see what we have in the one coming to you. I hope the 400 you received looked as good on the inside as the outside. Once I find one last 400, and White Oak it, I'll be in business with two 1000's and two 500's. They will replace two Bryston 4B's and two Bryston 7B ST amps...these Brystons will be going to eBay or somewhere to be sold to pay for my Phase Linear Experience..

I can hardy wait to hear this beautiful and powerful system, and compare it to the Bryston system. I hope it is a big step UP!!!!

THANK YOU LEE!!!!

I will get my friend's Hafler PRO 500 and my PL 1000 on a UPS truck as soon as I get more coin.....

Just brought it up on the DBT and the variac, no smoke, surprises, or glitches. Offset 14mv. Bias 347. Time to scope and feed it some waveforms!!
