And into 8 ohms, they both clipped around 505 again...
When the circuit is in play what does the scope trace look like?
Clipping, causing it to look more like a square wave than a sine wave.
I guess we would call that empirical evidence the protection circuit is not involved with the act of clipping....

You indicated earlier that the PS voltage was sagging to 79V when you were wailing on it at 4 ohms. Well your 55V RMS is 77.7V peak which is all she's got.
