No phase shift in the transformer itself...The secondary is in phase with the primary, depending of course on how you hook up the secondary. But if there is enough noise on the primary to get through those big filter caps (doubtful), the phase of the noise wouldn't really matter. I'm pretty sure that it will be filtered out by the main filter caps and the small bypass caps that I'm sure you'll put on the bridge rectifier. The only other issue would be RF noise generated by the motor itself, but unless it is a crappy motor that should not be a problem either. Besides, the motor is mounted outside the amplifier chassis, which will shield it from RF noise.
The diagram below was pulled from an article on transformers that I googled up... http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_2/chpt_9/4.html
The dots on the schematic denote the polarity of the windings. This article says that manufacturers have come up with a "dot convention" to indicate polarity...If there aren't any dots on the transformer a dual trace scope will immediately show you which is which.

I work with 3 phase mostly, just wondering if the same phenomenon is present here. When you take 3 phase 480 say, and single phase some 120 out of a couple legs your ground current goes up , does that happen here?
Hi Lee

With your 480V 3P, you are normally running your loads in Delta mode so there is minimal unbalanced ground current produced. When you are tapping off to make 120 you are either tapping off one of the 277V Wye connections or 2 of the 3 Delta connections. In doing so, you unbalance the 3 phase loading and that shows up as an unbalanced ground current (that is, the neutral current goes up)

This is a single phase connection so you do not have that issue.

What you do have is each half of the 240V transformer winding has an abnormal fan load on it (to the center point where the fan tap occurs to produce 120V). One half winding is bypassed by the fan load and the other half winding carries the amp load current plus the fan load current. Depending on the load attached (minimal or great) you will have some effect on the harmonics transferred to the secondary. Hopefully the fan load is minimal.

This is somewhat analogous to the loss of damping factor discussion we have had on the forum when you connect 2 woofers in series (especially if you connect 2 dissimilar woofers in series, which is more like this case).

One thing to remember is that a transformer will pass certain AC junk along with a pure sine wave. It won't filter noise from AC mains. If it's a step-down transformer it will step down any noise too, but the noise will pass through. Any change in voltage on the primary is reflected into the secondary at the level dictated by the turns ratio of the primary to secondary.
The transformer will pass it if the junk is differential in nature, the transformer will severely attenuate any junk that is common mode in nature.

Agreed. Any out of phase signals introduced by the noise will be attenuated on the opposite swing of the 60 Hz sine wave of the primary voltage, but that's a very complex waveform. Won't that noise be riding on the 60 Hz (or 50 Hz in Poland, maybe)? If I'm understanding Lee correctly, the fan outlet is in parallel with one half of the transformer primary when it's configured for 240 VAC. In addition to your analysis of the transformer load, the fan, tapped across the primary as it is, effectively makes the primary into an autotransformer. It behaves like a variac with a permanent tap instead of brushes. Then the secondary draws from that load. Like you said, there is current division in the primary, so any noise is introduced in that half of the primary. This is where I start to lose it and need to go do the math. Now, (and this is a guess) since the fan is going to draw around 25 watts, maybe 200 mA @ 120 volts, won't any noise generated be inconsequential? Before it makes it to the audio It has to get though the transformer's secondary inductance (and i'm just tossing that around as an unknown that may or may not be of consequence) and then through the power supply rectification and filtering.
Great discussion, I gotta run now, we're going to a movie. Later!

That's what I love about this place, a seemingly innocuous question and we delve into quantum mechanics to power a fan....LOVE IT!!!

We love getting down in the WEEDS don't we? :happy6::oops::evil4::happy7::shock::angry2: and then there was a black hole called GROUND LOOPS...
BTW, went to see the movie "AMERICA" by Dinesh D'Souza today. Fantastic movie...it makes you proud to be American again. It examines the lies of that those who would have us believe that America was built by ill-gotten means in a factual, historical look at our country's beginnings, maturation, and future.
An eye opener...for example, the first female millionaire in America was an African-American woman who started her own cosmetics company and sold her stuff door to door. It shows us the benefits of capitalism and talks about the American Dream. It's roots, and the realities that it faces in today's world. I left the movie feeling positive and informed. Very well done.
I don't care what your political affiliations are, this movie is a must see for those of us who are tired of being fed propaganda from BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE. USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!
And happy belated Independence Day, everyone!

I am proud of Dinesh D'Souza too, when an immigrant has more patriotism than many citizens of the US, we have reached a new low. I saw the teaser for the movie. Looks great.

Jazz thinks she's not going so she has reverted to holding Ma Cat down in his chair, a tried ant true method. Since going blind she has not missed a trip.

Yep. Got the crews lined out and we'll be on the road about noon. Takes about 3-1/2 hours to get there.
