They have been running for around 8 years with no problems. A 400 has 80 vdc rail voltage and the caps are rated for 160?
I got about 6-7 years out of them, but dont really know what caused that 1 cap to fail.

Dc Offset is 0.5mv left and 1.0mv right after removing caps from backplane
Pretty much the same

Yep, they would have no effect on offset.

Mark, I have not removed any that are not wounded...

A shorted output can take them out Darc..

I have 3 fully comp 400's with the revA backplane boards with electrolytic caps, they are 47uf 160 volt caps. Should they be removed?
If you like.

The current artworks do not have that position anymore. I got tired of answering the question of why those caps were missing in my kit :)

They only become reverse biased when:

You have an output device failure like Darcy did

AND

You blow one of the rail fuses.

Your choice Mark, none of my mules have them populated. They do no harm if all is good.

After all the chores are done, will check fuses and connect to pre, will play some normal level music to see how it goes.

Since removing the 4 caps from the backplane, the amp does not swing the meters on power up anymore, a damn good sign.

Going to buy an Audio Technica VM540ML cartridge next pay. The reason? The cartridge that I use for the AT440MLa and AT150MLX has a channel imbalance and I have had enough of using the balance control. Also the reviews say there are some nice improvements with this cart. The 440 and 150 Stylus will also fit it. Its hard to beat a Microline stylus for tracking, especially on the inner groove.

Not my turntable but here is the cart:
