Don't know about other folks, but the solder cups have to be handled with mini-needle nose. Scotch blue painter's tape holds them well enough that you do not need any weight on the silkscreen side after you flop them back over to SOLDER THEM TO THE SILKSCREEN side....

The experience gained from soldering the PEM standoffs is extremely helpful when trying to manage the meniscus on something this small. The lack of an extremely large copper plane also helps, heats up very fast...

Thanks for showing the build- I'm planning on this upgrade at the turn of the year after the holiday bills are paid. Another snag is that I just obligated myself to pay for a PL 4000/II preamp- a beautiful one from the original owner, and in stellar condition (hopefully no cracked solder joints between mother and daughter boards).

So- my question is this: since the transistors have to poke through the back of the cabinet into these boards, is there some kind of alignment issue that I need to be aware of? And is this alignment issue easily resolved? I saw the post on the PEM standoff holders- is this what is used to hold these things in place for soldering? (My naïveté is showing, isn't it?)

This kit doesn't look to be beyond my ability to execute, but sometimes there are some little tricks- just preparing myself...

Two and a half other questions:
  • This is a good time to convert from quasi to full comp, correct? (WO sells the semiconductors, right?)
  • I have to alter the driver board to accommodate the FC transistor upgrade (parts for both builds were included with the driver board kit).

The chassis were pretty consistent. No issues to this point with any 400 application. The only alignment issue has been with the heatsinks on the 700's. Some 700 heatsinks need the mounting holes taken from a"C" to a "B" drill.
The 400 backplane board kits are Quasi/full comp with a few component changes and everything is included to go either way , except the outputs.
The PEM standoff clamps are not necessary and are a product of our wonderful NavLinears mind and 3D copier. Joe uses a wooden dowel....
The driver board has to be
populated in FC mode, yes...

Awritie then- as soon as my Visa card is back down to zero...

Thanks!

BTW- What's with all you guys? I've never had replies to my answers this fast with any other forum! Go play a record! Get your noses away from your screens!
