That's how Joe does it. No foam pad for me. Insert part, tack solder on top , flip, solder and clip. When it comes to a cap, insert part, turn board sideways, touch iron to lead with other hand hold cap to board, remove iron, finish titling board, finish solder and clip.I tack about a 1/4 of the resistors then flip, solder and clip. Small caps about 4 at a time, big caps 2 at a time. It was 4-1/2 hours from start to finish. With several breaks to scream at the TV, turn TV off, fire up the tune box , etc....probably with no interruptions a good 3 hour project.

Populating the whole board then flipping and soldering would drive me nuts. When ya flip the board it looks like a wheat field any way and ya have to get the iron and the solder down together to a very small spot, and with other leads in the way you are constantly changing approach angles, velocities and bending the solder straight to make another approach. I would almost kill for a small iron that automatically dispenses solder at the tip of the iron......I could be plumb dangerous if I had an extra hand at times...

I clip the wheatfield as I go starting at one edge and working across. Faster that way. My record time is a few minutes over 2.5 hours, start to finish.

They make spool guns for welding steel and aluminum .... I know it would be tiny but looks like someone could come up with a solder gun like that ! A two stage trigger... pull it half way for heat and the rest of the way feeds solder.... Hmmmmmm....

Those are prevalent in most production shops where PCB assembly is going on. Especially in power supply manufacturing where manual assembly operations still exist.
