Although I'm very happy with my baby Pioneer there's just one thing that's on top of my "wanting" list:

Miles: I don't think that will be one you might chance upon in a thrift store. The black Euro finish is nice, maybe even nicer than the silver front. I always loved how Sansui combined the analog tuning with digital readout and the LED peak power level meters.

I have a Sansui G-5500 I am about to clean up. A friend of mine gifted me his old college-days system.

I know, but if I can find it somewhere... it will be mine!

Yes, the combination of anolog and digital is great and reminds me of the Revox B760 I had:

I've sold the tuner and the amplifier 5 years ago and kept the B77.

Stuck in the 70's

What a great thread...

We even got to find out how our illustrious leader was deflowered!
My Pioneer SX-1250 sits right in the middle of the "Monsters" I guess...with the king being the 300 wpc Technics SA-1000...I didn't even know a receiver existed that had that kind of grunt.
Now, the SX-1250 fully restored kicks some serious power, mine runs a bit over 200 wrms, but it can't compete with a pair of fully WOPL'd Phase Linear 700B's running electronically crossed over into the DQ-10's with subwoofers.
But then, you're comparing 200 wpc with around 1000 wpc, so it's not really fair.
It does sound dawgonne fine though!
The other big receiver I've got is the Pioneer SX-1010. I bought a pretty clean one on auction a while back, and I need to get it on my bench for a full restoration. Even as it is, it sounds quite nice.
Those old 1970-1980 era receivers were of a quality not seen before or since. I remember growing up during that time, learning about high fidelity, reading Julian Hirsch in Stereo Review, and working at Radio Shack out in Southern California. It was a great time...every night we'd gather 3 or 4 of us, at my folks house, where I had a room out back, a 20 x 20 foot brick place with a built in bbq and fireplace, and that's where I had my system set up. We'd party and listen to the latest music, which was also great back then. I remember a pretty constant flow of great stuff from Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Stones, etc...what a cool time.
The SX-1010 was the first big receiver I ever had, and I had to buy the one I recently got to relive the glory days...Ahhhh, retirement's nice!

Dave, how far are you from Connecticut, Pure-Brew has an SX1280 he's been dying to get rebuilt. rtp_burnsville gifted a cabbage case that I have used to ship the Spec1's and Spec2's and it's big enough to pack a big receiver. Joe has been hesitant to ship it due to potential damage , but this may assuage any fears he may have left of that.

Is that 1980 much more than the 1250? When I was at my repair guys house last he had my 1250 sitting nxt to a 1980 both opened up and the 1250 had a beefer look about it. My repair guy even commented on how the 1980 wasn't built near as good as the 1250. But I have no clue really I'm a listener not a fixer lol

The 1980 has the same amp section as the Spec 2. A little more rail voltage than the Spec 2 and rated at 270 WPC into 8.

Any Spec 2 worth it's salt clips about 330-335. Makes ya wonder what the top number on the 1980 is...

I was able to hear a 1250 last spring when I picked up an RT707 for my brother. Dood had a complete Pioneer system with some crazy Pio CD player and some HPM 150's. The 1250 is no slouch to say the least.

Sorry no pictures .
But I owned a SX 1250 and 5590 at the same time in the mid 70's.
The return policy at the PX was very liberal back then.
No questions asked within 30 days.
Got to try out a lot of systems that way.
Got bored one day and swapped cases on them.
A 5590 with a walnut case looks great, the 1250 in a black case was ugly.
Returned the 1250,the 5590 just looked better.
Owned one of the Realistic ST-(2100?).
Remember it was about 120 watts.
It was a very good effort from them.
Acquired another 1250 a few years ago, this one isn't going anywheres soon.

Here is a Receiver Shootout article By Brent Butterworth contributing technical editor of Sound + Vision and former editor-in-chief of Home Theater. I met Brent at Innovative Audio when we conducted the Cassette Deck Shootout in 2012.

http://www.iavscanada.com/receiver-shoot-out-vintage-vs-high-tech/

The Pioneer SX-1980 featured in the article is Gordon's.

This is a picture of my SX-1980 (on the left) and another in the shop being restored in May 2013.

Those 1980's were the top of the heap .
I have never run across one yet but I still would like to have one.
Just something about the way the Pioneers sound.

On the same day I was picking up my Pioneer SX-1980, Gordon took me to where Brian, the technician, was working on this monster receiver...well sort of a receiver, as it's a co-joined set - a Sansui G-33000 (300 w.p.c. @ 8 ohms). If I remember the story correctly, it resided in a family cottage and it had been dropped a few times, resulting in a couple of fractured PCBs. Brian managed to get it running again, but I don't know what became of it last year.
