The Phase Linear 400 Guinea Pig

The Pig is now retrofitted with Joe's latest and greatest. The "D" board as BOM'd for a quasi 400, the R38,39 resistors have been changed to 15 ohms, the bias now set at 510mv. Needed a new set of input jacks, and some shielded wires from the input jacks to the board then on the AP it goes.
It will get a complete test suite with no filters from 10 hz to 80Khz, which is our standard , but not the worlds. It will then get another round of testing with the IEC "A" weighted filter so you can compare to published specs of other amps. Another 30 minutes and I'll have it on the AP.
The Zoebel network will be 2-10 ohm, 5 watt MO 1%, with a .1uf 250 volt polypro cap.

The Pig is now ready to be tested....., and no Mr. Joe, I did not leave the PCB looking like that.

For the newbs, when rinning shielded cable from the input jacks to the board or volume pots , the shield wire should be tied with the ground wire at the input jacks, not so at the board end, could cause ground loops.

First things first. Self test of the Audio Precision ATS-1DD Audio Analyzer. Just the S&^% when it comes to testing, damn I love this thing....

Also, unless otherwise noted all test will be made UNWEIGHTED from 10 hz to 80Khz, 5 watts output, 8 ohm load, bias at 510 mv, firts up frequency response...

Other measurements... The level measuremets were topped out at 269 watts per AT 1% distortion, clipping was considerably higher, at 280.

Disregard the Noise measurement, that was with the IEC "A" weighted filter in. Next post will be the unweighted version..

Ok fellers, this is the figure that trips my trigger. Background noise, this is the level you have with no signal. Those figures are in MICRO volts, that's one fifth of a MILLIVOLT. That's damn good, don't care who ya are, should be the closest thing to a black hole for noise we have done yet!!
And those are the unweighted figures.

I would say Joe has gone beyond his previous effort quite a bunch, I'm itchin to hear this thing, but got a call gotta go to the field. Had a lot of lightning all over the country last night and the Collins sub is down on "Motor Stall" not good....

I'll get back to the unweighted tests as soon as I'm back, 3 hours I'm guessing.

Joe, helluva job man, us PL freaks owe you a BIG THANK YOU for your time and effort on this. It can't be a BIG money maker, I just hope it brings in enough to keep ya doin it!!!!! Thanks man....

BTW Joe, didn't lose a single Phase Monitor....

I am hoping we made some improvement in the Phase Monitors Lee, lightning strikes are hard to deal with no matter how bulletproof you make the design.

After all the success that Phase had, it is a mystery to me why they lived with this thump problem throughout the production life of the amp, even into the Series 2. It is not that hard to figure out and fix!

Lee we will have to see where the noise floor on that AP of yours is :-) Looks like we are giving it a run for its money.

Fixin to run the IEC "A" weighted series now. Got a ways to go on the noise floor---------=

Maybe the dedication wasn't there as Phase went through it's corporate iterations, then again maybe no one wanted to mess with Bob's design....

I believe they are more "survivable" now.

I believe they are more "survivable" now.

We deploy to areas that are prone to lightning strikes and having a system that can surive a direct hit is great. Our command and control van has taken hits that have smoked this more than once. Good job guys!

OK, IEC weighted...Frequency Response....
