I would not use the 3rd wire on the IEC plugs on the older stuff. When I did larry's I cut the solder tab off and left it to lead a lonesome life.

I remember reading something about NOT doing that with the earlier SS gear, can't remember exactly why at the moment but it made sense at the time.

Yes, R70 is empty as far as I can tell without looking into the amp (playing right now) and just looking at the schematic. I think Rod's board solves the turn off issue with the P33 circuit because it senses the AC coming off the transformer, not the DC rail power. I just checked and I have the necessary components except for the BC556 transistors. I'll order the board today. I have an excellent elevator relay with contacts rated at 16 Amps 250 Volts AC. It has a 24 Volt coil but with two sets of contacts I think I can get away with just using one relay instead of two. I think the White Oak Audio board's 20 Volts should be able to hold the relay at 53 milliamps. I'll put Q30 on an aluminum heatsink like you did previously.

I was cleaning up the schematics that "someone" provided and after I used white-out on the unused components, the circuit made much more sense to me. I recommend it. Also, when I drew in the pairs of 1N4148's, I realized that this is really an important change that can benefit all Phase Linear 700's. I think you could make a living just adding this mod to the amps currently out there (well maybe in Wyoming). Anyway, it has to have a name, we can't keep calling it the diode mod or the 1N4148 thingy, what do you think of calling it the "Gepetto Mod"?

If you have two of those relays, parallel the two sets of contacts for one channel, better chance of breaking under DC load. I bought a BIG BOX of old industrial relays on E-Bay awhile back and in one of the timer relays that were present, they had the 16 amp 250 volt aromats, god what a find. Paid 30 bucks for 27LBS ofd relays.

I'm trying to get another relay from my brother. They are made by Finder and it says Made in EC-01. I don't know what that means. He said the retail cost is $630. And I have the socket from the main control board!

So, Lee how far along are you with the rebuild? Looks like you are making tremendous progress. I would love to help in any way possible, but I have no source other than eBay for the vintage stuff, and you know what else you need....is there anything I can do? I am ready, willing and kinda able to do whatever I can to help you..

Hey, do you anyone who can do an alignment on my Phase Linear tuner? Everything works and it sounds great but it will not play in stereo and I can get the Stereo light to come on momentarily but it still sounds mono. I have a great chimney mount FM antenna and my signal strength is almost "10" for one of the local stations. My truck radio picks up great stereo on the radio, I can even hear the guitars jumping back and forth on Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" why not on my Phase Linear???

I don't have the service manual or I might try it myself. I've never done a FM tuner alignment but seriously, how hard can it be? Probably need a bunch of specialized equipment, yada, yada, yada.

Cpould you please add about 10 hours more to each day?? Nah Sutton, got it covered I believe. I should be ready for the DC protect boards by the time they get here. Should be done with all the rewiring going on today, then the board and the outputs go in.

Sorry, I forgot you have Phase Linear in your veins. It is a Model 5000. Simple inside, a FM demodulator, IF amp, and audio preamp all on one board. There are some variable capacitors, and maybe one or two potentiometers on the board. I would guess some of the electrolytic capacitors are tired, but I don't know how to test them without yanking them off the board. If I do that, I might as well replace them.
I'll try that first and let you know what I find.

Waiting on parts, the more I looked at that wiring the more I had to do something. The last guy to work on this wasn't much for aesthetics, it's still got some work to go yet, but it is starting to shape up.

Joe's new grounding scheme is in full use here, another benefit?? Even less wiring.

It is starting to look good. What parts are you waitng for? There don't seem to be many Phase Linear 700B's for sale that I can find. Usually one on eBay, but that is about it. I want to find a mate somewhere. How did you locate the two from California? Or is that a trade secret? Maybe I need to cruise Craig's List and try to find another one..I will probably be selling Braystons after I hear this amp!! Can't wait!!!

I guarantee you'll be selling the Brystons. Waiting n DC protect. Changed suppliers, Ampslabs quality was startging to suck. Don Imlay(wattsabundant) has some pretty good ones, just had to wait a wee bit longer.
The 2 i got in California sale was a no bidder auction on e-bay, the deal killer was pick-up-only, 1400 for a 4000-, 2-700's, an Akai GX-646, Marantz 2100 tuner, Pioneer PL45 D turntable, DBX 200, DBX 120, SAE 180 EQ, And a Koss time delay system with speakers.

I like to buy in bulk, too, but, even, that's bigger than I would have imagined, Lee. Some people pay $1400 in cabling, alone.

Nando.
