I did not think the PL precision would be that far off Lee. Mine was obviously closer than yours. No wonder all the socket bosses were fractured with misalignment like that.
 
.245 was the trick, but there's always one in the crowd...

I believe it was the heat sink vendor Joe. Tried the other minus drive HS and it was close enough to "jack-in".

The original holes look to be punched through the HS extrusion. I noticed that when I first went up to the B drill, it only kissed a portion of the hole indicating that the original hole had material plowed ahead of it by a punch.
 
Definately a punch job. The holes were really not on a straight line. They're all mounted now but it definately slows down the project a little.
 
You guys paid for a correct fitting product right? This is totally unacceptable or is it just a variance your going to have to deal with to fit every amp?

Your right Ron, these amps came with that 42 year warranty :-)

Every day you find something new that is screwy about the production of these amps
 
Ron Joe meticulously mapped the backwall of a typical 700B. Joe's end of it is VERY close tolerance and NOT THE PROBLEM!!! It is the F^%$#@#@ HEAT SINKS... There was enough slop in the original socket assemblies to allow for sme large tolerance from the HS vendor that is no longer the case and will have to be dealt with on a case by case basis. The process will be slimmed down to just minutes per heatsink but the beta test is to flush these kinda things out and figure out the best way to deal with em.....welcome to Joe's world....
 
Ron, that "product" was designed, engineered and put out for fab BY Joe! His boards are NOT the problem...
 
Heatsinks mounted up with no further issues...

Joe, I certainly meant no offense. This is why I also asked if this is a variance you are going to have to deal with every amp they go into

Lee, there is such things as manufacturing errors and that was what I was alluding to, it happens but I see now there is too much variance between the heatsink holes to ever make a perfect boards for the 700B

I will just :stfu: and go stand in the corner now, not the first time and I doubt it will be the last :oops:
 
Ron, that's not what I meant. If you knew Joe like we know him his product would not have made it out of the fab shop should they have been the problem. Joe's stuff FITS period. He's not perfect but as close as it gets most of the time. My caps weren't yelling just emphasis, AND DON"T go in the corner and :stfu:, that would be tatally opposite of your character and could cause spontaneous explosion....

Hi Ron
No offense taken at all. That is why I had the smiley face...

Board fab is pretty much dead nuts on these days Ron, you can count on true position plus/minus 3 thousandths worst case. I never doubt CAD to fab on boards these days.

What we cannot count on it seems is the manufacturing tolerances used to make these amps being anywhere close to that.

The 400 was much better because both the chassis and heatsinks were punched aluminum sheet. The variance seems to be in the extruded heatsinks on the PL700 and the secondary operations used to machine or punch in the mating holes.

We will use this experience to define a standard operating procedure to deal with it.

Gotcha, I still need to think about what I am trying to say when I try to convey a point. I tend to not use a lot of words to convey a larger meaning in my head
 
Vocabulary is a wonderfu thing, it pays to increase your word power....
 
I'm a two finger typer, but they're a real busy 2 fingers!!
