2nd row, same result, and I left the iron in one place this time, that way you can feed solder till you like the meniscus!!
I did not try one without a clamp so I can't compare between the no clamp versus the clamp but what I did like is what you just said - the iron can be moved slowly around the standoff and you can build the meniscus - get the solder flowing around the entire standoff and wind up with a nice looking solder joint.

I really like the idea of being able to manipulate the iron and the solder to taste without the possibility of moving the insert and losing the meniscus all together. Having them tight hastens the process even when you figure rig up time...and my holy grail---REPEATABILITY!! Successive joints look like you want em too!!

You guys are getting close to getting the backplane boards installed - can't wait to see them in place. It looks like there will be little space to get the wiring back and forth so that will be a challenge.

Very nice Lee.

Joe, to mimic the inevitable conversionist who does not possess a drill press, BUT DOES possess a countersink, I am going to try just lightly countersinking the chassis side hold down holes.....I put the boards on the heat sinks and they look pretty close. Not close enough for an EXACT fit but with some of the wiggle room built into your stuff it might go. Worth a try and will add more info to your assembly instructions should some converter be in said condition with no access to a drill press....
