Got it back yesterday, moved some things around to fit it back in the rack. Fired it up tonight.

Sounds great with these Snell EII's. I think SS is complimenting these speakers better then tubes are. Given that they are so laid back, the SS is giving better definition and controlled bass, but still sweet and smooth. Great MM phono section in this too.

Well damn...

Well I'll tell you, if I could get this thing completely overhauled, so it would run like new for another 30 years, I might concider keeping it. BUT - There's a decent amount of low level noise, there's still something loose in the pre which causes a channel-in the pre- to go out, which is fixed by switched wiggling. And, of course, no tuner.

Damn....

Some nice new 20yr warranty USA made, solid state electronics from Odyssey is looking pretty good to me right now.

Orange, it's an FM IC that was needed. I ordered the part from a guy but the shop said it was no good. You can look back a few pages on this thread and see the pic.

It's a PA1001A, and is the same in a few x80 models. I'm sure that I could get one at some point, or likey find a working lesser model and steal it from there.

It's more frustrating then anything. I'll sit on it for awhile.

This looks possible. I'm curious about it "working", but the seller looks good. I may toss a bid on it thanks!

Hi Joe,

After hearing of your predicament, I contacted Susan at Innovative Audio, just a short while ago, to see if perhaps their store had a PA1001A IC for your Pioneer SX-1280 receiver. Could you confirm with me which other model Pioneer SX-XX80 recievers had the same FM IC? You mentioned an SX-680 and an SX-780. If Innovative Audio sources out a good one out, would you be interested in it?

Nando.

That's really nice looking Nando! I need to take better pics.
Mine has a few blemishes, tiny spots on the wood corners, few spots of paint missing on the heat sinks etc. Overall pretty darn nice though, no wear on the front. (not bad for $125)

I know I'll have to throw some money at it. Not nearly as exciting as buying something.

I just listened to Steely Dan's Gaucho. This record, playing on the Technics SL-23, hooked up the Pioneer SX-1280 sounds like it was all made to work together. :love8:

I suppose if I go this route, It will motivate me to clean out other gear I don't need and make room for a record collection instead
Gaucho was one of the works I gather that MCA picked up from ABC Records before it was done possibly and Gary Katz' work made it the sleeper Steely Dan album of all time.

1980 was a strange year for MCA-Universal Studios if you think about it. Xanadu was a huge soundtrack to a hugely panned movie that also pretty much killed off ELO's career while skyrocketing Olivia Newton John. Gene Kelly was said to have considered it the lowest point in his acting career. The movie was directed by a television director who rose to the top of the Universal Studios' hierarchy eventually. The guy who played the younger love interest of Kira (Newton John) was a TV actor who never really had a big break again and still can't figure the movie out. Don Bluth became legendary when he left his old studio to animate the Don't Walk Away song sequence and went on to such classics as All Dogs Go To Heaven and The Secret Of Nimh.

The Tubes, were The Tubes. They went back to being themselves as usual.

Back to Gaucho...I still have the 33 year old cassette of it I got for Christmas.

I had about a half hour chat with this guy and I'm feeling pretty confident about his ability. Interesting he's a big PL fan as it turns out...
In selling himself on his abilities, he had a LOT to say about soldering, which, as it turns out is something I'm not too good at lol. He thought that it was likely that the first "working" pull FM chip that turned out bad, might have been good to begin with, but often people aren't very good or don't have the right equipment to pull a multi-pin chip without damaging it. Makes sense to me.
I'm going to let him have a go at this in a few weeks. I hope that the chip I got through Orange works out. If not we will try again. Likely he'll take care of everything else first, and take on the tuner separately.

Keeping our fingers crossed you can finally have your SX-1280 repaired. Those PA1001A ICs are the only thing that plagues those receivers.

Nando.
