Doug: I need more time to play with your 400. It sure looks nice and well taken care of. Once I do start a new thread on it, perhaps you could supply more information on the history of it. Joe says it's an early model because of the number of heatsink fins. I wouldn't have known that.

Nando.
Nando,
We didn't discuss a time frame for the loan. There is no need to rush, unless you need your shelf space back.

Once you start a thread, I will add its' history. I bought it in 1975. Doug

Does it have a DC protect circuit so its safe for your speakers?
I have this fuse box which both the left channel and right channel positive leads from the speaker connect into the box and from the box output leads to the amp's positive binding posts. The fuse box was lent to me by Doug when I picked up his amp. There are 2.5 amp fuses inside, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks Doug. I have lots of room in the stereo stand when it comes to demoing a new piece of gear. Once I have a few more pictures, I will post the new thread and I look forward to your additional information about your PL 400.

Yet, that's all my father ever owned. Four of them. He was an early adopter. Rumor has it, my parents were given a PL 400 as a baby shower present when I was born. What truth to that there is..... I can't prove, but instead of lullaby's to put me to sleep as a child, I was treated to loud blasts of music from bands like Kansas, Creedance Clear Water Revival, Boston, and songs like magic carpet ride and sooo many others I can't name; blasting out of huge speakers on a bi-amped 4 fin PL 400 system. Thanks to that upbringing; I've loved the PL 400 for decades. Until ten years ago when I learned of the 700. From there, research brought me to the 700B and there was no going back. That is.......until I learned of Joe and WOA! The holy grail! I stumbled upon it by accident.

Yes Nando. There is plenty love to go around for the PL400. My life started with those amps. So I shan't "shun" what they did for me in the audio world.

It's a great thing we have Phoenix and it's members. These amps will receive all the love and attention we can give. (Insert heartwarming silence here).
You were a spoiled child, and I mean that in a good sense, since I was brought up on using my parent's Fleetwood console during my teen years. They still have the console, and I still have all the LPs I bought in the 70's and played on their stereo when my parents weren't playing Mario Lanza and Italian folk music.

Its always a good idea to have DC Protect, I wouldn't hook a PL up to my speakers unless that protection was in place, especially an 'original' PL that had never been worked on. I'm pretty sure Lee will have my Series 1 700 sorted out well in this department with a built in unit, unless I am mistaken and these units are all external? Still learning here.

.... and that's why i don't use any of mine, except the 200 II, which is the only one that came with dc protect as standard.
It would cost me wayyy more than i can afford right now to add it to either of my two 700 II's or 400 II
I don't mind so much if I use 'em while bi-amping, as you tend to lose less that way.....

Can't wait to see what that Black Face Plate upgrade looks like on the PL 700 I plan to purchase. Could lee convert it to 240 volts for me as well? If its too expensive or hard to do, will just buy a step down transformer.
I have some dual primary toroids with the same secondary voltage, so it'll have one more additional upgrade.

So does that mean the conversion will be put in place so I can plug it into 240v using just a plug adapter?

Nope, bolts right on the speaker posts INSIDE of the chassis...
