Phase Linear 700 B On Loan

The way people on this forum talk about PL's; I'm just waiting for the day to come when this site changes it's name from the "Phoenix Audio" forum to the "Phase Linear Audio" forum! Lol!

The Day George finally gets a radford........

Nando,

The stock bead bulbs used in the PL400 for VU illumination didn't have a long life. Especially when it was usually left on 24/7. I got tired regularly changing them so added the switch to be able to turn them off. Changing to the amber LEDs has probably removed the need for the switch. Doug

Doug: I turn off the protective power bar, which the PL 400 is plugged into, after I have finished using the amp each time. I like the amber back lighting. Your PL 400 is dead quiet at idle - no hum or buzz coming through the speakers. But, I do find a big difference in power output from the 400 to your Laart WOPL 1000. I need more time to play with your 400. It sure looks nice and well taken care of. Once I do start a new thread on it, perhaps you could supply more information on the history of it. Joe says it's an early model because of the number of heatsink fins. I wouldn't have known that.

Nando.

Nando.

8 fins with the PL14A/B board came slightly later with the die cast support for the capacitors and bridge built into that die cast.

PL did not make a ton of 4 finners before switching production to the more prevalent 8 fin heatsink version.

Thanks for the history, Joe. I am about to learn more as time goes by on the Phase Linear power amplifiers.

Nando.

Does it have a DC protect circuit so its safe for your speakers?

Yet, that's all my father ever owned. Four of them. He was an early adopter. Rumor has it, my parents were given a PL 400 as a baby shower present when I was born. What truth to that there is..... I can't prove, but instead of lullaby's to put me to sleep as a child, I was treated to loud blasts of music from bands like Kansas, Creedance Clear Water Revival, Boston, and songs like magic carpet ride and sooo many others I can't name; blasting out of huge speakers on a bi-amped 4 fin PL 400 system. Thanks to that upbringing; I've loved the PL 400 for decades. Until ten years ago when I learned of the 700. From there, research brought me to the 700B and there was no going back. That is.......until I learned of Joe and WOA! The holy grail! I stumbled upon it by accident.

Yes Nando. There is plenty love to go around for the PL400. My life started with those amps. So I shan't "shun" what they did for me in the audio world.

It's a great thing we have Phoenix and it's members. These amps will receive all the love and attention we can give. (Insert heartwarming silence here).
