Great Nando, always a pleasure seeing such great photos and videos of a fine power amp, I'd find it hard to let go :thumbleft:

Thanks Derek. Doug and I met yesterday after work. I now have his PL 400 power amplifier. He also recorded some MDs for me on his newly acquired Sony MXD-D40. I may have to start another thread for the PL 400 once I slot it into place this evening. It sure looks nice!

There seems to be PL 700 B amps everywhere I look. Isn't that the usual affair? - you have something new and all of a sudden there are more of the same around. It is tempting to get one!

One of my hobbies is to collect old stereo magazines. I will scan and post a few advertisements I have in the Phase Linear Archives. I may even have the odd lab test on a few Phase Linear components.

Nando.
Nando, have you come accross an original PL 700B 700 Watt Club Ad? I can't seem to find anything around except scanned copies. I am seeking one out badly.

Watt club. Lets see how many windows we can break in the community center tonight. I know that Lee and George would be some of the Highest ranking members.
George specializes in blowing things up, and Lee just breaks windows with a slight turn of the volume knob. :laughing9:

Phase Linear 400 Amplifier

WATT? No love for the 400? I just patched Doug's 400 into my system. I was going to wait until I completed my first of six mix tapes I am in the process of recording but I couldn't wait.

No offense Nando. But I'd rather save that love for Miss December. ;-P Actually, I had a rack of seven PL 400's back in the 90's. But one day I trialed a 700B cause I needed more "oomph" on the bottom end, and I became a believer!!! I was born into the 700Watt club for life. As you know I personally sold my last 400 a bit ago. It was in the buy/sell/trade forum. I respect the PL 400. As I also own a PL 200. But the 700B? White Oaked? By God miracles DO happen! If white oak had existed back then, there would have been a PL 1000 flagship. I am certain of it.

Say Nando; swayed yet? Interested in your very OWN PL 700B? I have oneeeeeeee........ ;-)

Whats the difference between a White oaked Series 1 700 and a White Oaked 700b?
Aside from the front with different meters and a sensitivity switch, nothing. Or at least I think so hmmm.... working on David's 700B (first one), it did seem that the xformer leads were a little more substantial on the series I. Probably a slightly different design, but Joe n Lee would be able to say for sure. In any case, from the transformer to the output terms is all the same "schtuff" on what we do with 'em.

But yeah it's those meters and pretty lit center display that make me want a "B", eventually... heheh

Can't wait to see what that Black Face Plate upgrade looks like on the PL 700 I plan to purchase. Could lee convert it to 240 volts for me as well? If its too expensive or hard to do, will just buy a step down transformer.

Miss December from 1974 still looks like that? Although the pages might have yellowed she sure didn't!

A modded PL 700 B in my future ? Possibly. I enjoyed the opportunity to have used Doug's.

Here's Doug's 400. I will start a new thread for it.

All in the preamp. No knobs for gain controls like the 700, or power, or dB meter scale. Even the illumination for the meter display is handled by a toggle switch at the right side of the amp. Clean and mean!

Oh, first song for the 400 was Mr. Clapton.
