Buit if ya gotta have em the was some nice green di-something--phthallimate something that are top notch stuff on e-bay not too long ago. Bought all I could get my hands on. The ones that hav the best grip to date are the ones that came with these 10 device heat sinks I bought a couple years ago. Kinda cheapie looking, but exhibited a death grip.....[/B]
What is "nice green" a chemical or the part material?

Would giving the sockets a squirt with something like de-oxit or even RP7 from time to time, be a worthwhile preventative measure against oxidisation?
A little bit of lube and a tight fit should do it G. Oh - what a novel idea that is.

So do we know of a readily available, drop in TO-3 socket that is a far better design than what is currently in the PL's?

This makes me ponder.......Lee, remember the Socket that looked "blackened" in one of my photo's that you pointed out to me? I forgot all about that. I probably should have had Jerry replace that while he was digging around in the chassis. DOH! :sad1:
Just a little bit of soot around it, I think. I don't see any real structural damage, so it should be fine with a little cleanup.

A small acetone bath and if it cleans up you're good to go, if it's still black after the acetone dries it has been carbonized and likely conductive....

Following my son's medical appointment in Vancouver on Tuesday, we dropped into Innovative Audio. Gordon likes to show me all that's new to the store. I spoke to Brian, the technician, for a short time who was working on a couple of customer repairs. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Phase Linear 700 B being bench tested after a bit of repair to trace the issue of blown fuses. This is about the 4th PL 700 B he has repaired. And I thought they were a lot more uncommon to find in my area.

These parts were the culprit:

There seems to be PL 700 B amps everywhere I look. Isn't that the usual affair? - you have something new and all of a sudden there are more of the same around. It is tempting to get one!

One of my hobbies is to collect old stereo magazines. I will scan and post a few advertisements I have in the Phase Linear Archives. I may even have the odd lab test on a few Phase Linear components.

Thanks For The Memories

First, I like to thank Doug for entrusting me with his Laart WOPL 1000 this past six weeks. Now, it's time for me to return his Phase Linear 700 B amplifier and we are meeting after work today. I am going to miss seeing it in my stereo stand, and my Pioneer HPM-150 speakers will miss them, too. I have had a good opportunity to use this amp and I never did venture above the threshold of what this amp can deliver in terms of power output. Last night, I was playing through the selections I has recorded on MiniDisc for my next mix tape project. Then, later I disconnected it, gave it a clean with my micro-fibre cloth and cleaner before packing it away in its box.

Here's the tune I was playing while taking the preceding pictures: (Click on image to play video.)

So, now it's awaiting to be returned to its owner.

Thanks again, Doug!
