Ok... got 'em in today!

Now... I'm going to say... it was "B" that was the "dub". "A" seemed a little bit clearer in the high end.

Now... first listening impressions... It seems fairly "balanced" with decent bass and vocals. Actually pretty dang tight on the bass for the most part. Noise is a bit high, but could be because the overall level was a bit low (see next paragraph tho... not sure if that can be helped or not?)

Overall "not bad", except I do hear a bit of over-saturation distortion when the bass is particularly "heavy". I'd like to see how it does recorded with the Nak LX5 at the same levels (just so happens I have access to the same tune, so I can do that). Guess I'll also subject it to the "Man Machine" test too!

(love the "tune selection" btw.. weeeeeeeeeee, that's fun.... :thumbright: )

More impressions comin' up...

Ok, so next I went on side B of the "a" tape and re-recorded the same tune. Nice and clear... no distortion and peaking a good 3 db's over the original recording. Bias is spot on... nice headroom, all that stuff. I'd say overall it's a winner - guess it depends on the deck, since the LX5 really does any tape "justice".

Next was the "Man Machine" test. Average peaks were around +4 with a few +5's... The LF "big peaks" did pretty good. No major overload.

Not bad.. not bad at all for a type II. I'd say "winner" so far.

Next up... same tape in the Onkyo... :thumbright:

I think the distortion was in my system. Because I heard it through the headphones. I also heard the noise. These are a Maxell chrome. I don't know what I'm doing at the moment. I just bought a bunch of shells and I'm trying to get the loaders here. So I need to call in the Calvary. I have stuff to ship.

Yeah I think so too. When I did some recording tests, it performed wonderfully. Really nice sounding tape, methinks.

So when you say it's Maxell chrome, what particular Maxell model would it resemble?

XLLS I think. I think LLS was written on the box. Plus I'm getting the TDK-SA pancakes 11 of them. They are C-90s. The Maxell would be a C-60; but I can get a palette of the. Was just offered some cobalt at a very good price. Gotta watch my finances.

Ok, so tonight I did some recording with my Onkyo TA-207. The TA-207 is a very neutral sounding deck.

I have to say, again, the new Phoenix tape did it justice! :thumbright: Peaks are going right around +4 or so. Highs are clear and strong. Bass and mids, just about perfect. Noise floor - can't hear it. Hard time telling the difference between source and tape.

Yeah Larry... send some more my way when you have 'em made, to keep lol...

Web - can ya PM me your address so I can send these gems your way to try out? I am going to leave the sides on each that are "labeled" alone, but I'll put some "stuff" on the "B" sides of each for your listening pleasure.

Oops sent a C-90 mockup but now you have both the Maxell chrome and the Cobalt tape. I just got up and did a quick Chrome 3 vs spending a lot of time on the Cobalt. Took the Chrome II picture from the Phoenix Audio Tape Company pages.

That's a wrapped cassette. Getting a 'III' in there means the formatting has to be redone up top. Not hard, just had little time to do much with a picture.

You don't like the tape name matching the striping color?

Yep, looks real good there. Maybe we can call the Purple One "Purple Haze"?
Y'all believe Maxell is 'KING' and Purple is the color of royalty.

I see, you meant the picture, Larry...the light washed out the print slightly and I just inserted the 3. PDF will be better to work with, it's FLAT.

No, Jer, I'm not fond of the delay in general. I just got told you made a post and might I want to edit in light of that?

naw

There's already an edit function. It just takes a lot of time and might confuse newbies.

With the experience I've had posting to Disqus forums, they leave the platform so open that it can be easily doofussed.

If you could back out of large picture view directly to the previous page you came from (posting/editing or reading) instead of the dreaded "refresh to get there" thing in IE8.

Would compatability view help and I guess I could stand to find if it has an automatic setting?

Wonder f we could without getting in trouble for copyrights?

Larry
I don't think so. As long as there were no Jimi Hendrix images in the packaging. Song titles can be duplicated. Hence Lynyrd Skynyrd can write a song called "Born To Run" and not get sued by Springsteen. Along the same lines how about calling the green one "The Green Manalishi"?

Hi Larry,

Count me in as a tester if more needed, but it looks like you might have the bases covered...

Also, I wanted to reach out to you about the type I BASF pancackes you got from ebay towards the end of last year and find out how that tape performs? (assuming you've tried it out yourself)

Take care,

JT

I haven't been able to load any yet. I'm scared of type I tape. Unless I could find a stash of Denon . Then I would consider it; but when I can get good maxell and some type II cobalt for the same price as a chinese type I . I just don't see it. I will probably do the type Is for the indie records. I think I now have 2 artist in my stable.
