Before I power up

Joe or Lee,

I've got the ground wire from the bus to the chassis lug disconnected, taped off all the loose wire ends and tested the four bottom row transistors with the chassis and they checked good.

To this point, the only fuse holder that has any wires going to it is the first one that the AC main is tied to. Should there be more or do the other ones come into play later? If I'm ready to do a power up test, do I just use the fuse value that this will have when in normal use or do I want to use one of lesser value to be safe? Thanks.

The power supply should be completely wired. The +, and - rails, to the caps and fuses. The object of this power up is to isolate any problems with the backplanes. To do that you have to have a functioning power supply.

Amateur at work here. Are you saying that I do not have a completely wired power supply and if I don't, how do I complete it, please? Thanks Lee.

You said the only fuse that had any wires going to it was the Mains fuse. Correct?

Correct

It's got the one AC main wire on the fuse tip and the brown and blue wires from the transformers attached to it. The other AC main wire is connected to the thermo switch on one lug and the two yellow striped wires from the transformer are attached to the other thermo switch lug. Neither of the other two fuse holders have any wires attached. Obviously I'm missing some...

Yes..you are. Now it's time for the B+, B- fused and unfused wires from the backplanes to be attached to the fuses and the PS caps.

Okay, thanks Lee. I need to go back through my documentation and see which wires go to which fuses and which ones go to the PS caps. I totally missed that, somehow. Sure glad I didn't power it up yet!!!

You would not have hurt anything as the only thing being powered up was the transformer, PS caps and BR....

Yes, reading up on the assembly notes for the backplanes is a must. It'll save 10 long posts about what goes where. Joe has done an excellent job explaining what goes where...

Thanks Lee. I'm sure I've read it more than once but there's a lot there that's all new to me so hopefully the third time will be the charm! I'm going to go dig in now. Thanks again my friend, I appreciate all your help.

You're very welcome Nelson, glad to help. We have a vested interest in the outcome...we want to see you do well.....because if you can solder and follow instructions, you really can do it. And other people can too...Fred, Mike, Dave, and quite a few others have done their own....

5 years ago I had Echowars hold my hand through my Spec 2 rebuild. I felt overwhelmed at times but I made it, with a lot of timely and patient help......just passin it along Nelson...

Phew!

Okay Lee, I couldn't let it alone, I knew I'd sleep so much better, albeit fewer hours so I did it. You are right, Joe did an excellent job with this documentation. DUH! It was on the table that I followed to wire the backplane boards before installing them! The far right column tells me where the other end goes!! Sometimes I make things more difficult than they really are. Anyway, now I need one fuse cap, I forgot the amp was missing one when I got it and I never replaced it so testing will have to wait until I scrounge one up here in one of my junk boxes or, if worse comes to worse, I'll just buy the whole assembly, they're cheap enough.

Thanks for paying that hand holding forward Lee, it's a huge help on this project and I have a feeling, even though it's a different animal, it will make my 700B project go much smoother I'm sure. I know I can do this, it just bugs me that I often am asking questions that I know I have the answers to here somewhere but seem to look right past it. Anyway, I connected all the wires on that table except (obviously) the ones that go to the control board. The yellow output wires I landed on the new white and red speaker terminals that came with the DC protect circuit kit. The white output wires go to the control board so I'm assuming that I'll be reusing the original white output grounds on my new black speaker terminals and I discard the cap/resistor clusters that were attached to the old speaker terminals.

Thanks again Lee, I look forward to each step of this project and, other than being frustrated with myself, am enjoying it all, this is fun stuff this hobby of ours!

You're doing a good job Nelson with this major upgrade. This is not for beginners but Joe does an excellent job of documenting and Lee is great at hand holding and assisting through these builds along with both of them being just really good guys. It's been enjoyable reading your thread and I know this will be a great sounding amp.

Thanks Nav, good one, Lee!!

Thanks Nav, I appreciate that and agree about both Lee and Joe being good guys, along with all the guys I've interacted with here in the Phoenix Forum thus far. Heck neither Lee nor Joe knew me from Adam and both have been happy to help from the get go. I'm having a lot of fun doing this and, thanks to them, expect to enjoy the amp very much along with the 700B that's waiting in the wings.

Lee, it was late, my camera was in the house and I didn't feel like another trip back and forth. I know your tongue was planted firmly in your cheek when you wrote that but I may just take some anyway, just in case there's another guy or gal like me who's understanding is limited and for whom photos could be helpful, plus I like the friendly ribbing, makes me feel like one of the guys. :)

Tongue in cheek notwithstanding, your pics have allowed Joe and I to spot things before they became a problem. And in this instance a picture really is worth a thousand words....

True enough

I'll take a few pics in a short. In the mean time, I didn't find a fuse cap so I bought the entire holder at Radio Shack, it was like $2.50 and I also got the 8AGC fuses that I need (they came in a four pack-I'll have spares) but I couldn't find any 5AGX fuses. The guy at Radio Shack looked them up and asked me if they were for a car as he said they were automotive fuses. Just in case I could use them, I bought a four pack of 5AGC fuses. If they're not a suitable substitute, where do you guys buy the 5AGX fuses? Thanks, as always, for all the help.

You have to call up the data sheet to get the correct pic, but yes those are the ones, but the pics are not of an AGX 5 fuse...
