Out of curiosity, I have this CT-F700 sitting next to me that I brought out of mothballs. I notice that sometimes it makes this very audible buzzing/clicking noise and the right channel needle is pegged when it does. I am thinking this deck needs some serious work. I am scared to hook it up to my system and chance popping a driver. Fast forwards/rewinds no problem and I am assuming still holds speed but that buzzing is troubling. I am wondering if it has to do with the bias control or dirty pots???

Its pretty amazing that sometimes a little electronics cleaner can seem to "fix" what seems like a much bigger problem then assumed. I was going to toss my ctf9191. Channel noises or dead channel etc. Cleaner made it all go away.

I've seen some aftermarket ones that change it to RCA connectors at the base of the tone arm. I haven't used my table for a couple of years, but was having trouble with the stock cable at the connection point.

Microprocessor? That's a joke, right? Papst induction motor. One motor, one cap, one switch. Should be dead simple, if I understood it.
 
No that's not a joke. When I bought my system in 1975, I quit studying every new thing that came out. By then I was chasing the oil boom all around Wyoming. Didn't have time for anything else, I have a very large knowledge hole from 1975- 2005.

As you have likely already gathered, it's an Empire 598 III. Produced in the early 70's in Jersey.

It's a beast. Looks like a frickin washing machine underneath.

There's a huge thread of "Empire turntable history" over at AK.

It's a neat design mechanically.

I just looked, and I don't have any good pics of the underside, but they're out there.

I have considered converting it to a microprocessor controlled motor if I can't figure out what's up with it. I'm a bit pig headed though, so probably not. Fix it right, or don't fix it!

Turn it on with the top off. Could be a sticky relay also. You can take an insulated screwdriver. Touch where you think it may be coming from and put you ear on it. Just like a stethoscope.
 
I have some extra time off so I'm going to experiment with a few things that are lying around. I just hooked up the Bellari VP130 with a Tung Sol 12AX7 tube. Not bad. Not bad at all. I might try the AT440mla on this table. I thought the AT was a bit too bright over time in the past. However, I do think it generally handles high frequencies with more detail, not just more enthusiasm. The Rega arm on this TT seems pretty decent, but headshell swapping was soooo much easier.
