Larry's Phase Linear 700B

Re: Larry's 700B

It is a neat program. That is why I sold all my meters except my DVM and my cap checker. What is good about it is you don't have to renew it every year.

Re: Larry's 700B

Finally got the pots today. Larry's 700 will be officially finished tonight, boxed and shipped tomorrow.
I realize these are not precision pots, on the 6, resolution ranged from 90.1k to 98k on the high side to 1.8ohm---.7 ohm on the low side. Just so happened I found a pair out of the six pretty closely matched.

Re: Larry's 700B

The 700 goes under the knife again. New volume pots, input coupling caps and a meter from one of mine. Larry's waited long enough. Joe ( White Oak Audio) and I have been talking about a different cap for C4. Might swap em and see how it sounds. He suggested another bypass cap.........................

Re: Larry's 700B

To the rescue, one of the most versatile elements known to fix it people. Yep---------------HEAT SHRINK---------AKA-------POLYOLEFIN tubing.
The coolest thing, everything is reversible, someone may have a better idea next week. The trick?? Keep adding layers till it fits. Leave it longer than the faceplate width, then when you compress it with the washer and nut it swells to tighten in the hole.

Now it's not like we are putting 20ft/lbs of torque on the puppy, BUT, firm feelin switches are like firm feelin.............................................

Re: Larry's 700B

The original pots had a solder ring. The new ones just posts. So, had to find the smallest ring terminals. I had and the cut them down some more.

Re: Larry's 700B

For the less experienced out there i can not emphasize enough the need for a good solder sucker. When desoldering the old pots they fell off. AND THATS what you want.

Re: Larry's 700B

Interrupted the work for an on going e-mail session with Joe at White Oak Audio, Dayam, this guy is SHARP!! Sent me a layout of the new PL14A/ board, it's a thing of beauty. Same basic premise, but God is it layed out nice. Anyway, back to the 700B.
The discussion was about the input coupling cap, at factory 2.2, not the best for LOW FREQUENCY response. We will now have 4.7 bypassed with .1 polypropelyene, or even better polystryene. C6 will be bypassed with a.1 polystryene, and C4...............................BUHAAAAAAAAAA

After looking at my notes a Spec 2 is input coupled with a 4.7............See where I'm going with this??

Granted that adjusts the break freq from 6.4 to 3.0Hz(Thanks Joe) (not to mention the harmonics) but hey if you're building something that will register 7.9 on the Richter Scale a guy's gotta do what a guys gotta DO!!!!!!!!!

Re: Larry's 700B

Polystyrene bypass on the C6, Input coupling caps with bypass, and finally, new pots. In 30 minutes one more extended listen(probably all weekend), THEN back to the hills of Virginee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Larry's 700B

Are you going to test it with the daqarta program?. By the time it gets home there will be a space waiting. LOL Well a clean space. Still have the Hafler pre. So I will be able to hook it up.

Larry

Re: Larry's 700B

2 caps and an op-amp and the 3300 will be ready to go. I might send it till the 4000 is ready.

Re: Larry's 700B

I just e-maled Joe to see if he would do a 3rd party test, I'll let you know.

Send it here and I can do an eight party test. It may take a year or so as I don't have parties that often. But it is not everyday that one can soak beer into a 700B. :cyclops:
