Re: Larry's 700B

I've had it in the 300-350 watt range, and it does sound good. The Black Gates were the finest Audio cap made, when talking about their top grade. When their lesser offerings are all thats left Elna RFS and Nichicon "Muse" Are more than their match. I'm researching Black Gates really hard right now. I'm suspicious of these as there are no series numbers on them. If the chinese will counterfeit a 15cent transistor the motivation to counterfeit a 10-100 dollar cap would be impossible to resist. I'm not saying they have to have a series number, but if they don't they'll be the first I've seen.

Now, with all that being said, Michael Percy Audio has a pretty good stock of the lesser BG's and I cannot find any series numbers on them either.

Re: Larry's 700B

I will before the nights over and test listen. They look damn good and the 47's i put in sounded to good to be counterfeit, so, shit, hard to say. They appear to be available in certain values and series. Handmade electronics had a few too.

And a certain amount. I ordered some of the ones and he was out. He didn't say he could get more either. I scrounged for about a week looking for more. Just a few places had them. And like you said only in certain types.

Re: Larry's 700B

Now this may sound dumb. But would Alps pots make a difference in sound? They had another brand 24 step. I forgot the brand. They weren't cheap that is for sure. I have not done a lot of mods only on speakers.

Re: Larry's 700B

The pots on this 700 don't appear stock and are rather cheap looking. They are noisy. I have some Alps out of some other equipment i was going to use to replace these. And yes they can degrade the sound a bunch. No room for stepped attunators in this puppy.

Re: Larry's 700B

Would the 4000 do better with some black gates? If you give me a list I will search. Also if you tell me what controls would be good to replace I'll search for them also.

Are you going to change the RCAs also? I have a bag full. If you need some. I just need to keep 2.

This setup may be going to the capital fest.

Re: Larry's 700B

The RCA's are in great shape, don't see any reason to change those. You mention the 4000 again, you never did say if you wanted it. The offer still stands that I'll trade it straight accross for the 3300 II.
Larry, I don't think the Blackgates that are left are any better than Nichicon Muse or Elna Silmic II's. If you can get your hands on the VK or FK series they are better.
Controls on the 4000?

Re: Larry's 700B

LOL why the bump? Ronin are you trying to get to 1000 posts? I have some stuff leaving today that will keep you busy.

Yes if the 4000 has more inputs. I need them with a full rack. Yes I could probably get those Black Gates; but at over 100.00 each. LOL My pockets aren't that deep.

Re: Larry's 700B

Yep it has more inputs. Like I said, the small difference betweern them is not worth it.

Re: Larry's 700B

I trust you my friend. You know better than I. Can the 4000 be improved. The phono stage on the 3300 sounded so analytical. I didn't like it at all. I like the warmth.

Re: Larry's 700B

I ordered some Brown Dog adapters with some Burr-Brown OP2134 op-amps mounted up. Should tame the phono section. Bought enpough for the 3300 II and the 4000. We'll see how they do.
Was awfully busy at work, been getting in at 9 or 10 every night. I have some time this evening though so the new caps are going in, then after a listen the speaker posts and speaker protects. One of the California 700B' made it today with a serial number close to yours, so I was gonna do some comparisons on the boards etc.

Re: Larry's 700B

Got to the 700 tonight. Replaced the electrolytics on the board, along with q1-q4 on each channel. Q1-Q2 replaced with TIS-97 Fairchild, Q3-Q4 peplaced with 2n5401- fairchilds.
DC offset now 8,4, 9.3 mv, compared to 38, 40. We'll take that. the bottom of the board has been acetoned to remove old and new flux and then sprayed with WD 40 and the excess dabbed off with fine bristled brush. By the time you are reading this i'll be listening to it.

Re: Larry's 700B

Yeah, it jams. Was going to listen to a song or two, well it turned into the whole "Tales of the Inexpressible" by Shpongle. Simply @#%$ing Amazing. This album has some heavy loud bass passages with some bells and flute interspersed with it and you can almost see the guy tapping the bells or the flute players fingers move over the airholes. There is no distortion in the bass and no more muddled highs, clear and identifiable, a joy to listen to. Snares sound like snares not scratches. You can hear the guitar players fingers moving over the frets like you were there. I'm impressed.
I thought the silver solder might be hard to work with, it's not, flows really nice.
