Looks like you need a new sata cable. Those connectors break real easy. What you can try is to reverse the connectors, try putting the broken end of the cable on the motherboard and the other end on the drive. The motherboard connector has a plastic surround which may hold the cable in place and keep it connected.

I'll check tonight when i get home as I probably have a spare sata cable.

If you are unsure of the settings just leave them. I think a single sata drives should work in the auto setting, if not set the raid to disabled and try.

I'll ask my friend to get me one today...he should be able to help be on that...although he didn't sound too fond of SATA.

Well if he wants to move onto more modern equipment you don't have much choice. Pretty much all new drives both optical and HD are Sata. I don't think anyone other then ebay still sells IDE drives and I think 650gb was as large as they made IDE drives.

He just came over with two Dell XPS slimlines, one working with maybe 2000 and 80 GB and the other not but there was a 320 GB IDE in there to check out.

What to do about the SATAs though?

Back in an hour or so.

Good news, irrelevant news and news...

I have a good copy of Windows XP without programs that passed a scan. I'm trying to figure out which version. Wish it were easier to just put it in a computer and set it up.

I formatted the IDE drive and at the moment this Dell has 400 GB of HDD space. I think I can get a legit install of XP from my friend, the Home Premium upgrade would do then. I'm going to run a service tag check on the dead Optiplex G350 and see what's under the fan and also could use a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 for this. I wonder if the $5 lots are still out there...

This Dimension and the P4PE-X if it starts tonight. That's too good to pass up if it'll work and although you fancy this as junk the Dell would still make a decent jukebox.

If that is your plan, then build the jukebox by all means. Just not sure how well the audio path is in a P4 dell though.

Can you upgrade more than one license with Home Premium Upgrade?

You can upgrade only one. Sure the disc will work to upgrade as many as you like, but you will only get one COA with the upgrade, meaning any others you upgrade will shut down after 30 days unless you acrtivate the COA, and if you go online to activate the COA o nthe second one the first one will give you the same message once you get online to MS.

One is a start...

So are these two 3.0 GHz P4s right for my Dimension 2350 (the other would be for the Asus P4PE-X)?an someone help me get them as I have no Paypal?

oops...http://www.ebay.com/itm/301124475475

I have a dead Optiplex G-series with a 2.8 GHz in unknown condition but if it worked it would be a spare for the Compaq Evo and the other Optiplex G-240 has a 1.7 GHz. I have them both for parts.

Contact the seller and ask if he will take a money order. Ebay forbids you to list MO as payment in your auctions but you are permitted to accept them if the buyer asks.

I'm flat broke for 8 more days, can't count my money until my hand is filthy and had to ask a friend to help me get a couple loaves of bread and some apples in an otherwise sufficient stock. They're only less than three dollars with no shipping though, and I have your address in the first place. They are in multiple lots but how long will they last? That is the best deal I've found on eBay PERIOD, almost 2 for 1.

Will that work?

The cpu's the guy on ebay is selling are socket LGA775 so they wont fit or work in your Dell Demension 2350 or on a Asus P4PE-X motherboard, or Optiplex G-240 All three of these computers only support socket 478 Pentium 4's.

Socket 478 cpus have the pins on the cpu while LGA775 cpus only have pads on the bottom, while the pins are on the the motherboard cpu socket. Besides this the Dell and Asus chip sets are intel 845 and they wont work with or support s LGA775 cpu.
