Gibsonian's Cherry Pl 700 Ser I, soon to be a PLWO-1000

So----"Cathy" is still sitting here waitiung to be load tested. Had some work issues and a 3 hour phone conversation with Ed Blackwood. After my after lunch ice cream is ate I'll be getting after it.

Ed Blackwood has been working on PL stuff for 20 years. He lives next door to Dean. During our conversation I asked about the different output levels I was getting thinking my ytest stuff was getting iffy. Well...... seems the transformer manufacturing process then produced a product that varied in output. they referred top them as cold or hot. Suttons was a "HOT" , my Cali 700B was a "Cold", "Cathy" is very HOT. This should be interesting.

I'll be following any updates on the test session, later tonight. Lee, this was an extensive performance upgrade you completed on Scott's PL 700 Series 1. Batten down the hatches at the Laatsch's. And Cathy is a good name for the amp, Scott.

Nando.

The flatscrteen is down the 300 watt incandescents are removed, Jani will be standing by with a net to catch stuff coming off the shelves.

Ed B. is a cool dude. He spent some time with me on the phone as well a number of moons ago educating me on PL history, amplifiers, etc., before I bought a 700 from him. He even took in a series 2 400 on trade. The series 2 are good, but not near as good as the original stuff. It's a small world of PL freaks, and I like it.

Amen Scott. Cathy is a beast-----526. watts at 20 hz, 527 watts at 200 hz, 522 at 2000hz and 496 at 20,000hz. both channels loaded and driven into 8 ohms.
My 400 watt load rersistors got HOT!!!

Got my ears and the voice coils warmed up with my Cali PLWO 994, with some Shpongle --"God Particle" . It'll take me about an hour to have her flirting with the K-Horns. Stay tuned.

I sent him a White Oak driver board, he sent me a box of stuff, very, very nice guy.
He said the board ":intrigued" him.

That little transistor died, doing what was its destiny. Its mother would be proud.

If you mean Ma BELL then it took a lot more than 48V to ring her up!

The 5 amp rail fuses did not survive square wave testing, needless to say it's stable to 600 watts with a square wave.

That's a beautiful thing right there. Evidently this clear, precise, soundstage up the ying yang was repeatable. Sounds just like the OERW of Sutton's. Scott you are gonna love it.

Pegged the SPL meter at 130 sitting with me in the sweet spot, MY GOD it was wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

Very good to hear the operation was a complete success. Due to the advances in electronic medicine, the patient will live a much more fullfilling and satisfying life I've no doubt. Good work Lee.

Thank You Scott. Had tro order som replacement relays for the DC protect relays, as they didn't like the 110 volt square wave either.

Another successful sound test, Lee. I would never get away with a 130db run-up on a power amplifier without legal repercussions. I doubt I have the equipment to satisfy your blood. I might occasionally feel over 100db, but I'm only guessing as I don't have an SPL meter.

Nando.

I didn't either till Larry sent one. It raised some questions as well as answering some.

Scott, I had to put together a new driver board for this as it was starting to act strange after a few hours. The upper half of the sine wave was degrading and it started to sound horrible. The massive square wave affected more things than I understand , so , in the interests of reliablity and survivability, it gets a new board. On me. I can't send it out the door knowing other stuff may be marginal due to my graceful slip of the popt on my signal generator. A tip to others out there who may read this, DON"T feed your PL square waves after midnight!!!!

the new board will be done and in later tonight, will report back then on whether the transplant was successful.

I passed out at my desk last night. Just got off work and eating dinner. I've got the transistors left to put on the board then in she goes. It should be ok, i've tested the output section and all; is well there.
