    Under - biasing on purpose

Thanks for your answers! So, it depends on from what perspective anyone sees this case. I guess it's a totally subjective thing. Very interesting, indeed!!!

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Do you have cut/removed r31, r32, r37, r38 with the njm2114? If I remember correctly these resistors should be removed only when using the ne5534. If using other opamp like ne5532 or your njm2114 I think these resistors should be left in place.

    Under - biasing on purpose

Hello! Is it a common practice to slightly under - bias a ferro cassette tape to enhance high frequencies in order to equal the high frequencies losses over use?

    Adjusting signal with resistor

My two cents: don't mess with the meters circuit. You should find out why your output is higher than it should be. It has to be something with the ic 5 & 6. Fix this and I bet your meters will show correctly. Do both your RS-B965 act the same? I have two of these and no one has the problem you...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Sorry, I must have missed you. Using a Dolby level test tape and adjusting the pots to have 245mV at the chip, you get 570mV at the rca outputs?

    Adjusting signal with resistor

.... Or 245mV @ pins 21 and ground, 22 and ground of the Dolby chip (cx20187)... Which is the correct way to adjust playback levels.

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Sorry, Alex. At Dolby level, the output of these decks is about 545mV. The 400mV are for the 160nWb test tape and is something 2.8 dB below the Dolby level.

    HF loss - general

I've done a same try with RS-B965. It didn't made any difference with or without the pad on playback but the recording was suffering. @Skywavebe these Aiwa heads are quite beaten!!! I haven't seen any cassette head with such a deep groove. I wonder if they have their gaps open or they have some...

    HF loss - general

The problem with head wear isn't only the depth of the groove. It's also the condition of the gaps. Depending on the situation, the edges of the gap are getting eroded, scratched or anomalous without a significant groove presence. These anomalies affect the quality of the sound and definitely...

TDK CDing 2 vs Sony HF

@vince666 Vince, it's a matter of luck. As we had discussed it some time ago (at TH, IIRC), I'm among the few people who don't have any problem with the SAs. I have a variety of them and no one suffered from any malfunction. I wish I could tell the same about my SA-Xs, though... The later SA-X...

TDK CDing 2 vs Sony HF

The cassettes arrived. I made a test recording. Soundwise, it's similar to the SuperCDing, a kind of SA. It has the sound signature of SA: drop of the mids and starts compressing a few dB over the Dolby level. Quite good detail but not as the "old good stuff". Manufacturing quality is very good...

    HF loss - general

You could easily see the wear pattern in my case. But at your case, it looks like something electronic and not mechanical (in my book, the wear of the heads is mechanical and not electronic issue). Since you switched the whole frond with another and the issue continues to exist, then it's not...

    HF loss - general

I truly don't know. Maybe some bad replacement parts? Some new caps are not on spec? Wrong calibration? Can't say. There are worse cases, though. When I bought my first RS-B965, the heads were so badly adjusted by the factory that over the years of use, there was an offset groove accumulated...

    HF loss - general

As I have replaced heads on an exactly same deck as yours, I can definitely confirm that you will need to recalibrate the deck after the replacement.

TDK CDing 2 vs Sony HF

Well... the winner is TDK CDing 2. I took the risk. What made me to lean on that choice was that I mostly will record from vinyl and I want the extra resolution a type II offers against a plain ferric. I wouldn't care if source was a CD. Wrong or right, I don't know. I see when they arrive.

    HF loss - general

Record on a tape a frequency swap with the good deck and play it on the problematic deck to see if the problem lies on the playback or the recording side.

TDK CDing 2 vs Sony HF

Thanks, Jim! I had the impression that CDing 2 was a cheaper formula than SA. Good to know it's the same. The shell isn't a major problem as it's the same as D and quite good.

TDK CDing 2 vs Sony HF

Mostly rock. I have some of the late EU made HF. They are sounding very good. I haven't tried the Mexico made. I never have tried a CDing 2. I have heard not so good comments. I know they aren't Super Avilyn. The other non SA TDK I have tried is AD 2 and it sounds OK.

TDK CDing 2 vs Sony HF

Well, it's the week of questions!!! Anyway, as the title says, I have a project and I need a lot of some c46. I can find the above cassettes both new and at the same price. The TDKs are type II but entry level while the Sonys are type I but not the low end. Which one would you preferred...

    "Tonar" stylus, opinions?

A piece of metal? I truly don't know (but the hammer sounds good, though). As for a diamond tip that is shaped and polished, I'm not an expert, but I guess polishing leaves some irregularities on the surfaces that are rubbing with the groove's walls. So, it needs some wearing for these...
