Placed the order couple days ago to go full comp, backboards and driver board!! Also have the speaker protection ready to throw in. Was wondering if anybody had a good place to source some decent colored wire for internal wiring?

Also if anyone has any good tips for things I should do while having the whole unit apart. I already upgraded the power caps. Was thinking about getting a new bridge rectifier but no sure if that is totally necessary. Also might throw in some fancy RCA outputs

Super pumped about getting to work on this thing and pumping some solid watts into my cerwin vega D9's.

Just recapped the D9's too and they sound great. Didn't replace the 100uf 100V NP's cause I couldn't find a decent replacement that wasn't $35+ which makes it tough to pay $70 to upgrade at this point in time.

600-1000 volt is usually what you find at 35 amps. either is plenty.
Same deal on bridge voltage applies as the snubbing caps that are applied across it. It is the bulk voltage, 82 for the 400 or 105 for the 700 plus (120x110%)x1.414 = 291 worst case. So the minimum voltage you can obtain to satisfy this is 400V. Higher is better as Lee says.

Finally getting around to working on the driver board. Attached a pic of the finished results minus the two germanium resistors. Looking pretty sweet!! Still looking to get some wire. Found a guy who sells solid teflon in different gauges and colors. Thinking 22 for the driver board and 20 everywhere else.

Also received my PL 2000 in the mail today. The guy I got it from said the light powered up but he didn't have a way of testing it. It was cheap so I took a gamble. Opened up the unit and it doesn't appear anyone has been inside of it but there are a few solder areas that I am not too sure about. One is the glob with the blue wire and one with the white wire coming out and the other two in the upper left hand area of the same pic.

Also noticed one place that looks like solder splatter joined a couple traces. Last thing is the awesome fuse that was in there. Might be a reason for not working.

The other pics are of some other bench projects going on. One is a HK Citation 16 getting the overhaul and the other is an HK citation 17 waiting patiently for its turn.

I've threaded quite a few 2000 builds. Preety easy to search for. You might get an idea or two from them. Good job on the board!

Like those Citation 16's. Would love to own one of those someday. Lower power than us PL nuts are used to but simply cool and all the HK stuff is really built well. Please post your results when done. The PL2000 was my fav PL pre. Good luck with your projects. I need to put together a plan for full comp 700, out of a series I!

I will definitely post my results of the PL 400/2000 in progress and will give some updates on the Citation 16. Right now I have completely redone the two driver boards with new caps and diodes/resistors as needed. Also put some new pots for bias/offset. Upgraded the power caps and updated the bridge rectifier with some new fairchild diodes. The heat sink assembly has been done over replacing the various resistors and caps. The last issue I have is one of the channels dead and I have narrowed it down to bad outputs. Just have to figure out which ones and find some replacements. After that it should be ready for some testing.

The 16 is rated at 150 WPC but it is definitely a big 150 watts and is no slouch to the PL 400 but I am sure once I get the 400 WOPL'ed it will kick its butt big time. After that I will have to get another Citation 16 to run dual mono and if I recall that will give me around 500 watts/channel!!

My Dad has a PL 700 series I. That baby is what got me hooked on Phase Linear. He is super excited about my progress on the 400 and wants me to tackle his unit afterwards. He is using it to run a set of 4 Bose 901's which is ungodly loud even without cranking it up all the way. It needs a good overhaul to update before going big.

Haven't looked into it much but where I can I grab some info on upgrading/modding the PL 700 series I??

Quite a few threads where I've WOPL'd the series 1's.

New BP electrolytics will likely sound better than the original electrolytics in those D9's. Those can be had pretty reasonable.

Surely you mean germanium transistors.

I am surprised that germanium transistors would be used in an amplifier like this due to a low tolerance to heat and problems with thermal runaway.

1304, 1305 germanium TO-39 cased transistors are used in the protection circuit, not a whole lot going on there most of the time..
