Broken beyond repair but highly affable
All home speaker drivers. If you pay the shipping for the drivers, you can have them in exchange for some sealed Type II 90 cassettes. But the tapes aren't to be sent to me. I would like to have them sent to Derek in Australia.

Nando.
PM being sent...

Pioneer CT-F550 Recording Trial

So, I completed a test recording on a TDK SA 90, the same tape I used in the first demo of my Pioneer deck playing Eric Clapton. This was recorded without Dolby.

First the recording:

Then, the playback of the recording:

Here's what I intend to send Derek, Nando...do you think an oddball 70us 'chrome' Type I like That's VX will do?

EDIT: I see I'm one short...I'll get a good Maxell XLII in there. BTW the bottom right is a BASF CR-S II (chromdioxid super II), dark blue and gold label.

I've totally lost the plot....
If anyone is interested, there's a salvageable Nakamich 700 up for grabs (and soooooo cheap) with a day and a half to go, here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261244458949?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

.... but, take note, that not only does it have a missing output knob, it also has a stuck meter.
They get stuck at Zero dBu for some un-Godly reason, and don't return to their normal rest position even when powered off!
Although this is a common problem with Naks, I've yet to find a cure for this on Goggle.
(my 660ZX has the same problem as did a 700, I had years ago, and I've seen others with the same problem.)

So there it is. A bargain that I must pass on coz it's over there, and I'm over here.... (sob sob.....) :(

Wow what a surprise! Thank you so much Steve & Nando, you are champions, certainly made my day there :) The pioneer deck you have is very nice and I remember those models recorded quite well. Were you pleased with the quality of the test recording? I Did a recording years ago on a CT-200 which has the same type of tape function buttons but is more of a slimline model, it turned out very well. I have a friend who has one stashed away in his storage unit, would love to get my hands on it as he doesn't do much with tapes anymore. Still waiting for these capacitors to arrive for the nak 480, I'm sure it will like those chrome tapes.

Those tapes will be great, Steven. We will work out the rest of the details on shipping, later.

Derek: Opportunity knocked, and I wanted to return a favour to you for all the music you've provided me and I appreciate your technical expertise in teaching me new methods of enjoying music.

Once Steven and I figure out the shipping details, we will finalize the swap. It won't be until next month, at the earliest.

That CT-200 looks to be the brother of my CT-F550. I am quite surprised everything worked on my deck. I may squeeze out a mix tape on it as a final test, but, essentially, it works as new.

Those tapes will certainly be worth the wait, some very nice variants in there! I remember buying a sony UX in my teenage years, that tape today still sounds awesome and has been played so many times in different machines. Very curious about all of them actually. You will like the mix tape, its one of your favorite brand of tapes, it has been used but is still in very good condition, in fact it was the only ferric tape of that "type" and "brand" that I had in good condition, you mentioned it on the forum not too long ago and I thought it would be the perfect tape to use :) To make it easier to record, I pulled the JVC TD-V661 deck out of the cabinet and sat it on a box next to my computer desk. It sure becomes a work out getting up and down 20 times to press record/pause/set recording level for each track.
You can imagine what it was like when I did 10 cassettes of 45rpm records with my yamaha KX-530 deck still in the cabinet a couple of years back, enough exercise for a month :laughing9:

It does record very well Nando, the sound is perfectly faithful and also the levels when playing back, that means the calibrations still rocks after all these years unused. Great deck! :thumbleft:

Derek: Very nice, I hope to see or hear of more members trying out basic ferric tapes. There's a greater level of satisfaction from a nice recording on a basic tape, than a good recording on a premium cassette. You put many hours of recording time on your venerable JVC. I did the same with my Pioneer CT-F1250, until I needed to record with Dolby C, and that particular deck only had Dolby B. I would never catch up in hours on my Esoteric V-9000, comparable to the time I spent on my CT-F1250.

There are many good tapes in the 10 Steven has put on display. The Denon HD-8 will, especially, catch your attention. Even I don't have many of them, I wish I did. Sony UX-Pro had been my last go-to tape for recording, but I need to replenish my stock of them, so I've held onto my remaining stock, for now.

Yamaha TC-800GL

Miles, I have another boxed cassette deck to share with all of you. This is a deck you don't see that often. It's a portable and will operate on batteries. I hooked it up last night. As with the Pioneer CT-F550, I powered it up and left it on for about an hour before playing a cassette in it. Cleaned up the heads, tape path, and pinch roller with 99% IPA. I haven't cleaned all the exterior surfaces on it, yet.

I will play around with it more tonight. The playback seems to be fine and fwd and rwd are OK. But, the left meter is lazy and doesn't correspond to the output signal from that channel. I may delve into it a little more. For this deck, because of its uniqueness I don't mind spending the $50-$75 to repair or adjust the left channel meter.

I played a pre-recorded tape last night. It sounded fine.

Nando.

Ah.... Yamaha's answer to the Nakamichi 600.
Had one of each, and for the life of me, just can't remember what had happened to either of 'em.
I did find at the time I preferred the 600. It just had more 'sparkle' without resorting to flipping the Dolby switch 'off'.
Very nice Nando, and complete with box etc..... A very desirable collectable.
You don't see them very often, and in such lovely condition.
Lucky lucky you..... ;)

Nice unit Nando, I bet that records quite nice too. Would be great for boot legging live shows, get those alkaline batteries ready =).

Thanks George. I haven't had a Nakamichi 600 deck, but I did have the matching Nakamichi 620 wedge amplifier for a short time. I traded it in towards a Pioneer Elite MiniDisc deck. I never tried the amplifier, as I donated it to Innovative Audio after we found out that the power transformer had been removed (before I had it given to me).

This deck has many great features like pitch control, and portability when you load the 9 batteries into the battery compartment. I like the way the tape loads and physically latches into the cassette tray before pressing down the tray. It has a nice soft eject of the cassette from the tray when the eject button is depressed. And today I tried another pre-recorded tape - Peter Gabriel's "Security" from 1982 on the WEA label. I had the tape set to play the second song on Side A "San Jacinto." You can see this deck in action as I load the tape, play the song, try out the pitch control, engage and disengage the Dolby NR, and rewind and fast forward the tape. This deck is from August 1976. How would I know that? I have the warranty card with the owner's information printed on it.

Yes, I am very happy to have this one. It will look even better once I've had a chance to detail the exterior.

Derek: Thanks. For field recording, how can you go wrong with a Sony Walkman MD recorder. This Yamaha is unusual enough for me to keep it for awhile.

For portability and recording quality you can't go wrong with a sony MD. Back in the day though, that portable yamaha would have been great to take along provided you had the space to set up the microphones :)

I never took mine 'in the field', so i never got to use it as a portable. I had a Nak 550 for that. ;)
.... but nonetheless, that Yamaha is a most unique little collectable, and yours is just 'to die for'
can't wait to see it all detailed once you've finished Nando. you will be most satisfied I'm sure, and definitely a 'keeper' especially with all the original bits like the box, AND that Warranty. Priceless!!!!
.... and i've forgotten exactly what, but there is some significance to that designer's signature, but i just don't remember wot it is now. sorry....

George.
