Those who enter the man cave will get WOPLed
it's got a full race crossflow head and fuel injection, with a nitrided stainless steel crankshaft....
Sounds like my Nakamichi 480, rewinds and fast forwards tapes that quick that I'm worried it will snap them when it gets to the end :toothy10:

Well, I'll have a Nakamichi 550 hopefully by the end of next week to muck around with.
I've waited a long time for an affordable one of these to pop up locally, and here it is.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261257209415

To my surprise, my offer was accepted. Yee Haaaaa!
Needs some work, but still a goer.

:)
I believe I have an old magazine article on the 550. Once you receive your Nakamichi 550, I will scan the article and post it for you. As you said earlier, it was one of the best portable recorders of its time. I would love to see you get it working properly.

Well, I've got it now Nando.
It's almost as bad as I expected. It does work, but it'll need some tweaking.
The left ch is up on level lots on the right, but at least they are both working. A good cleanup of the heads and guides is in order.
Also, it's VU lights don't work and the pause won't latch so that'll have to be fixed too.
The outside physical condition is not as bad as I expected though. That should clean up quite nicely.

All will be revealed once I crack it open. I have the service manual, so some serious reading up is in order first.
Still looks very nice though.

Anyway, for now, I'll put it aside, until it starts raining again.

George.

Two decks came for $15 from CL today and one mostly works while the other should do with one or two belts I'm hoping...

The first is the Pioneer CT-20, Dolby B-only basic model from 1983? I'm guessing, same as the failed SA-1050 that would've mated with the TX-950 I have for a set. I does play but the takeup reel doesn't move and the tape gets bunched up inside the shell (which was remedied easily with a rewind and fast forward before playing on the other deck. It will not fully engage in play (my guess is that since the counter does not move it goes into auto stop)...no FF/TAKEUP movement, whether or not the counter belt is good, no forward movement to engage record and hence auto stop.I can't get the meters to move in REC because of this but they DO register when in play and the tape is somehow moving over the head...

No tape was eaten at ALL so I don't thjink the capstan was the problem...

No. 2 actually works and with some TLC will come out nicer. It's an Akai CS-M02 with fluorescent meters, Dolby B-only vasriable headphone/line output knob, rec mute and other than the recording level and playback level pots needing a good cleaning seems to work very nicely! I DID work the output pot out and cleared that problem for the most part but the recording leve pots (concentric) need a good cleaning.

It too has a bad belt somewhere between the drive and the counter and that in turn means it won't stop automatically, the exact opposite of the Pioneer. The counter moves some here and a fraction there, however that works out for functions.

Now the flash/no flash shots for lights.

Nice decks Steven, hope you can nurse them back to health. Did you ever get my mix tapes? I have the track list handy if you have already listened to them.

I did and they are awaiting some quality time with Nick's while I'm not busy moving the house about and maiking my sciatic nerve b*&$# at me. It will be interesting to hear how the Sony Metal XRs sound as I never recorded any.

I almost had an entire shelf or LPs come down but for the VHS camcorders below them stopping the lot...my RCA Records CD-4 demo LP for Panasonic and a few other choice titles were in that section (Whew)!

The Akai isn't so hard but I hard to rule out other reasons for the Pioneer than the probable belts.

WOW! WHAT A COLLECTION YOU HAVE! But... No Elcaset?

How about a vintage late '50s RCA tape cartridge machine?
Two videos I made for Ebay auctions on RCA machines I had:

Thanks for the videos. Cool decks, Mark. Do you still look for more of those vintage tape decks? I do have a Sony EL-7, which I am using to create an upcoming mix tape for a member, here.
