The Official Reel To Reel 'Porn" Thread

Nice read there on JRF. Good to know there's some cats out there still doing it.

Got a few minutes here - I'll play along. Some of the beasts that have wandered through here since I took up the hobby again...

Hopefully this beast will be coming back to me in a couple of months with new caps and freshly-lapped heads from John French.

Caps are on the way. I'm using a few more NP caps than I originally intended. The NPs have gotten smaller and cost is about the same as polarized, so why not go for the best!

Cool. I've got a meeting with my buds at TPAC next Thursday, will stop by on the way out of town in the early afternoon. Should even have a check to cover some of the work.

I gotta see those heads, too.

Hi, here is the Teac X-2000 score/scroe I did last year:

It was provided with a dozen of NAB tapes and a NIB TZ-650 dust cover.
I fixed the mechanical problems (frozen pinch roller arms & melted belt, thanks to Skywavebe for the tips).
It plays flawlessly but the recording sound very bad (no treble, not yet fixed BTW).

Nice looker, Leo. Getting any accessories with a R2R deck is icing on the cake. Did the deck also come with the Teac take-up reel?

Nando.

Weather finally allowed me to get to Nashville today and after some meetings, I swung by Nakdoc's place to put my Tascam 38 on consignment and check on the Ampex. Tom showed me the heads that came back from JRF Magnetics - he couldn't believe how good they looked and I couldn't, either - thought they looked like new. I think John said I had 60% or so left, but you'd never know it looking at them now. Gorgeous is all I can say. Cannot wait to hear this thing once we get it freshened up and the heads reinstalled and calibrated.

Ok, so where are the pics of these in your home setup?

Well, I saw those same decks from a european fellow at Flicker. The same goes to the Maxell colored empty reels. Those decks were custom made by the owner himself. Perhaps our friend here is him. Who knows???

People who claim ownership of such nice equipment should at least post a pic with that same specific gear in their personal setup. It is too easy to just download pics from google and claim ownership.

Edit: Notice those pics were "showroom" type pics and not shown in a real operative setup.

An introduction by twinimage would fill in some gaps. I've seen some of the metal reels he has reproduced and they are gorgeous. He does very nice fabrication and no doubt those open-reel decks showcase his work.

Nando.

Googled 1st image and it comes up as an image from eBay, did you buy it from eBay? Very nice deck!

Pretty sure he has those decks listed on ebay. Or had.

Twinimage is the real deal.

I always give people the benefit of the doubt Ben. My post was more for D2's comments and I just googled the one image and it came up as an eBay image. I posted it because he said they were his current decks so that led me to wonder if he had bought that beauty off eBay. The Pioneer's looks so much cooler with the black finish

I agree. Im not as big a fan as some are of the silver gear.

I definitely like the silver faced gear but the Pioneer RTR's look so badass in black. Were these only offered in black for the European market???? I think Nando posted an image of a black 1980 and I thought that looked badass also. Probably why I had a love affair with some of the black Sansui equipment, they just look so tough
