Nice RT-909, Robert. Have you been getting much use of yours? I use the RT-707 more than the RT-909. White wine for RT-909 and red wine for the RT-707.

Do you use any of the dbx stuff you have there with the 707? encode/decode? I have wanted to get a 224 to try out and see what it can do.

Hi Nando,

I don't use the RT-909 very much. It was a real adventure getting it going so tend to use the 701 or the older Pioneer which came before the 909,707,701 series. I actually like the older Pioneer better in some ways (1011L or something like that) than either of the other Pioneers. I think they are the most under-rated RTR out there. The 701 is really nice but just for small reels....... I would like a 707 for the collection but they are crazy expensive around here.

Mike: One of the nicest model of Akais out there of that vintage. The GX-635D gives up nothing to the GX-747 in performance. Screaming deal on buying yours.

Nando.

I've been very happy with it's performance and get lots of great feedback from the tapes I make for the AK tape swap rounds.
Crazy thing is about it's favorite tape blend to record on - Radio Shack Supertape! I snag these sealed or very lightly used, whenever I spot some.

Mike: I use the other dbx components, but not the dbx 222, yet. It's patched in and ready to use.

I haven't tried RS Supertape for open-reel recording. Thanks for the tip. I have about 20 NOS 5" reels of Supertape.

So- what's the top speed of those 10 1/2" decks?

Do any go up to 15 i.p.s.?

Curious...

Got a few minutes here - I'll play along. Some of the beasts that have wandered through here since I took up the hobby again...

Hopefully this beast will be coming back to me in a couple of months with new caps and freshly-lapped heads from John French.

Very nice recording environment, Bob. You did a nice job with the custom side wood panels on a few of the R2R decks. I bet you will get full use of your Ampex deck once it's ready to roll.

Thanks there, Matt and Lee. I'm back recording today.

Pioneer RT-707

My favorite 7" deck that gets the most use is my Pioneer RT-707. I will be using it for an upcoming recording some time this week.

You're nicely stocked on premium tape, Matt.
True. But I don't count that 996 among it. Although I love how it sounds, especially on my TASCAM 3030, it's an unstable tape. It doesn't have true SSS, but something-thought to be lube failure-that still cruds up the pathway and brings it to a halt on fast wind mode. My eventual goal is to replace them gold reels with ATR Master.

Is that Mr. J-Corder??
No. This is JRF Magnetics in New Jersey. Found out while talking to him about the Ampex heads that he used to live/work in Nashville. Still does a lot of custom stuff like those 2", 8 track heads for the big machines I'm lusting after for UTC's Studer A80. Normally, he outfits Studers and later model Otari MTR-90s, but he said he had just sent a set of those to Chris at the all-analog studio I visited a couple of years ago in Nashville. Seems Chris is/was building a custom, fully restored, 2", 8 track MCI JH-24 for Pete Townsend.
