Is it practical to operate a Reel To Reel set on it side.
As long as the reels are locked on it shouldn't be a problem- you can even lay it flat on its back. I don't think there are any rules regarding the orientation of an R2R deck.

Not on it's side but laid down flat - a lot of units are made that way. Doesn't look as good though.

I have not made any comparisons, other than my A4010 and A3300s. They both sound pretty good - I'm satisfied for how I use them.

The 4010 is a sought after machine, along with the A7010. The 4010 is only a 7" reel. The 3300s handles up to a 10".

Laying the unit flat makes it easier to clean and demag the heads.

I thought I would be spending up to a couple hundred to try the R2R's out. Didn't rush into things and found two this summer at garage and flea markets for 1/10th what I was willing to spend - leaving more $'s for an eventual WOPL.

That isn't an option in that the turntable is on a sliding shelf that rolls out about 2" to allow the dust cover to open. But I guess I could ditch the cover and put the tape deck in that spot. I know I never see a dust cover on any high end set up anyway. Not that my gear is high end. Interesting thought. That space is17.5 H x 24.5 W :profileright:

Possible to remove the hinges from the TT's dust cover? Take the cover off when listening and toss it back on when you're not.

Agree on flat and would steer clear of it being on it's side, too. I have seen folks that have space issues who want an open reel deck with 10" capability and set them on amp stands.

Not as well known out there - but don't ignore the Pioneer RT-701, which is the non-auto reverse version of the 707. If you're willing to get out of the easy chair a little more, you might find one for less than a 707 because of the lack of auto-reverse. Otherwise, it's the exact same machine.

Also - for your space considerations - the A series Teac would be a 2300. There are several iterations, including a version with Dolby, but they're getting pricey these days as well.

Thanks for getting those pictures posted, Lee and Jason. First I've seen of that model. Some interesting features.

Nando.
