The Beatles
Hey Jude
Parlophone PCS-7184
1979
Great Britain

1st non-export UK release on Parlophone
Super quiet, clean pressing, end-to-end
This compilation is the first time EMI licensed rights to 'publish' two tracks off of the United Artists only 'A Hard Day's Night' soundtrack for the corresponding U.S. pressing (1970)

A couple of factoids about U.K. pressings -

* Most album jackets in the U.K. were laminated in a glossy fashion for several decades - probably because of factoid #2
I have a collection of Black Sabbath NEMs UK pressings from the late 70's & 80's, all with the same treatment
* When you shopped for albums in the U.K. back then (... and this probably goes for most of Europe too) they weren't shrink wrapped. No BS. Sold as 'New' yet they'd be sitting unprotected in the bins at the record store, ready to have the LP removed & inspected
Certainly more prone to jacket damage from repeated handling but kind of cool that you could look at the actual disc before purchase

When I was in London in 2001 and picked up some native gems at the Tower Records/Piccadilly Circus location, they were still doing it that way although the lamination thing started to wane sometime in the 90's, probably for cost reasons

The Beatles
A Collection of Beatles Oldies
Parlophone PCS-7016
1977
Great Britain

Another super clean UK pressing
This is the first swipe at a Beatles Greatest Hits album
Interestingly enough, this collection included 'Hard Day's Night' tracks - since United Artists didn't have a hold over European publications upon it's release (1966)
This album was only ever available in the U.S. as an import and if you can believe Wiki, was deleted from the EMI catalog in 1987... making it somewhat of a gem

Haven't spun this one is decades too
Also purchased at Rainbow Records
It's the "A" cover variation - which there were a total of 6 different ones released - with different camera angles into the bar

Was tempted for a while to put water on the sleeve to bring out the color but got cold feet
Here's what that is all about ...

Looking back I never expected the outer, paper bag type sleeve to hold up very long
No significant disintegration after 40 years

Amazing
(learning to use plastic slip covers early on helped a lot ...)

She said we couldn't do no wrong
No other love could be so strong
She locked up my heart in her bottom drawer
Now she took my heart she took my keys
From in my old blue dungarees
And I'll never go to Texas anymore

Syntonic Research Series

This one is kind of cool. When the better half complains about missing the ocean, I put this one on. :smurf:
One side is seashore, pounding surf. The other is aviary ambience with birds.

What's really different about it - and something I've never seen before - is this statement:
"This recording is playable at any phonograph speed with full stereo effect."
It even notes the playing duration for the three suggested speeds - 45 RPM, 33 1/3 RPM and 16 2/3 RPM

I forgot where I found this one - probably paid a buck for it - but it plays like new and the pressing quality is outstanding

The linear notes inside the gate-fold are cool too -
