If those are stepped attenuators, isn't having only 5 positions leave some big jumps from one setting to the next? I suppose that the preamp will take up some of that. That's the one thing I didn't like about the Pro 700's. But setting the attenuators on the amp to about the 2-3 O'clock position and then using the pre made it just right. I also used a regular PL-700 pot on them in some cases.
You could be right. These are two pole 12 positions make then break pots

not sure if they can work

There is an audible performance difference between an attenuator and a potentiometer.

Plus you can cherry pick the resistors that go into an attenuator. But the eBay one I got with 0.1% SM resistors sounds fantastic- WAY better than a premium Bourns pot.

You can call them what you want but they do the same thing. As I said, we can find something better than a $2.00 pot.

I understand the meter is backlit. Via what means? LED? Certainly not incandescent. Adjustable brilliance? I assume any backlight is powered off of the low voltage winding. is there a viewable prototype?

LEDs, 14 total, 7 on each side illuminating the backlight light guide.

Fixed illumination, powered off the existing 6VAC winding of the original transformer. Meter still has the protective release liner applied to the face in these photos.IMG_6501.JPGIMG_6503.JPGIMG_6504.JPG
