Good Question. The simple answer is yes. I want to keep the all the functions of the dual 500 and because this unit looks to be the #2 built - why change it it may be worth something one day.

The hi lo was so it could run 2 ohm loads and will automatically switch if low impedance is sensed. As well you can manually set hi or low in 4 and 8 ohms.
Voltage in low is 85 volt and becomes a very 36 transistor 400. If you don't need the power just leave it in low for lighter loads on the components, not what I do.

I spent all day noting all the wiring and component changes. I went through all the 400 and 700 series manuals and tech upgrades. I found several of the errors in the documents Ed is always warning about just hiding there to bit you. The Series two factory full complementary Drawings have mistakes. I will post new ones for the 700 - 400 after this is up and running.

So so the wiring is now full complementary with stock PL32 board changed to full comp setup. The Pl32 has the same circuit as the PL36 for the left and right channels. I reused the RC components as they are also unique to this unit and are different in my other units. The control board will be repopulate with new parts with min resistor value of 1/2 watt. I have 2n5416 and 2n3439 for main transistors. I haven't committed to use the Thermalloy heat sinks or the originals. I am leaning toward the aluminum ones. All the wiring to and from the PL32 control board will be new Silver Teflon wire in heavier grades. Some of the front end wires are are not going to be touched.

I am going to try the OAO627 op amp in this unit.

New power caps caps and Bridge rectifier and rerouted DC supply moved away from the AC lines. They were in the ozone when they put this concept together with everything in one bundle not cool.


By the way the high frequency circuit is in the middle of the PL32 board. It is used to throttle back the power when common mode distortion is sensed at high frequency. This was for fead back control to save the amp from discruction driving horns and the like.

One wire to decide on is the sensor for the high frequency unit. It was on the emitter side between the transistor and the emitter resistor. On B- side Haw the these are inverted I will move the wire to this same layout on the full comp set up.

I noticed this while tearing into the Clair Series II. I finally had to set 2 units next to each other to figure out whether the manual was dicked up or the oddball Clairs...... It looked like it was the manual. There were wiring discrepancies on the 36 board, and some components did not match the skizmo. I'm calling the Phase Linear plant and complain..... :)
 
So as I am doing this I realized that it beter look good cause I have no idea if it will sound good

So I made the plunge and ordered a bunch of new face plates to make her glow. This is only being done in order to keep up with Perry. Dam you!!!

Backplate finished except for some caps on order.

So next thing is the repainted or powder coat the chassis. It is all steel construction.

Any input on this i.e. Best paint for the job etc. is welcome.

I wa going to take and get media blasted first then either powder or poly paint. Got to find a shop with afternoon shift and get it done on the side.
 
Thanks for the approval Lee. Just trying to keep up to your high standards even without 300 pieces of machine tools I wish I could lay my hands on.

So so in waiting time I was looking at rerouting the AC. I am moving bridge rectifier to what is shown in photo from traversing the chassis.

What caps did you wind up with??
 
To fix my machine shop depession I went to the shop and used the drill press to add extra holes in some bridge rectifiers to make it easy to add caps and when needed power to the DCP boards

I finished up the new bridge and have positioned it

I need to look more closely when I order also, I n need the extra holes for the ac feed for the DC protect....

we got distracted today by going to see Specter and 007 in action

I got some with no holes extra holes and some with three so I did up 6 in about 5 minutes so that should hold me for a little while.
