Work too much

Good for you Miles,
I have heard of the workings on these units but have not had the chance to work on one. If you think that is a heavy unit pick up a Z6000 or a C-1.
They call these Esoteric but I still see the general transport used on the regular stuff- cam belt, DC servo motors and such. The V900X is still higher quality build I think. Th Direct drive motor has not failed yet.

As to the Yamaha motor being larger, the older motor had additional cases around the actual motor so it is possible you have the same thing in another case. The size is not so much the difference but the older Teac units had FG pickups in them while the Chinese EG motors are just voltage regulated. I have not had one fail on me yet. I have EG5302D-2B motors in stock still.

I know how well your Sony cassette decks record - I hope the Teac V-5000 can do as well.

Nando.
Well, to be honest: it doesn't.

This TEAC is in pristine condition and it sounds and records very well, but this deck can't compete with both of my Sony's as it comes to overall recording quality.
An average user won't notice any difference, but to my standards there is a remarkable difference.

I think that Alex (A.N.T. on TH) was right in his statement about some TEAC's.

Nice to hear your feedback on the Teac, already, Miles. It makes you appreciate what you have (Sonys) even more.

That was a quick turn-around, Miles. Good on you for helping another cassette enthusiast. Is the buyer someone we know?

Plug & Play......

Some snapshots of the Nak, recently taken while testing:

Although an entry level and very basic Nakamachi, in this case it's just a matter of "plug & play"..
Not a single scratch on it and NO technical issues! Only cleaned the usual stuff and demagnetized it.
I really love the simplicity of it, and it sounds very, very good!!

"Fabrique au Japon"...

This is fun!

Aja

Enjoy yourself Miles!
I will.....

Testing as usual; recording Steely Dan's "Aja" (96/24 WAV) on a TDK-SA from 1988.....

So far so (very) good.....

But Jeezzzz! Whished there was a volume control for the headphones on it, the output is VERY loud!

Nevertheless: This 25 year old bargain is recording awesome!

As said before; This is fun.

Miles: The Nakamichi entry-level, 2-head cassette decks are very good at playback and recording. I found out how good they are when I was given a BX-100 and then purchased a BX-150 at Innovative Audio for use in the Tapeheads' Nakamichi Travelling Tape, last year. I have heard recordings in a mix tape exchange I had with Joe (Pure Brew), who used his CR-1A. http://forums.phxaudiotape.com/showthread.php/1961-Your-Latest-Mix?p=34906&viewfull=1#post34906

I think you may decide to keep that one for awhile.

It will stay of it's curiosity, mint condition, the price paid for it ($4,-....) and it's performance.

Why don't we do the Memorex challenge both on the Naks? You will record it on one of yours and I will do it on the CR-1E...
Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

That's a great idea, Miles: I thought of it before you said it. I have three more mixes to complete before our Memorex recording.

I am still amazed how you can get such great deals on old audio gear - especially on components that still have life in them.

There's a lot of crap for sale for ridiculous prices in Europe, but I think I've got the right nose to sniff around and pick up the right stuff every now and then.

The Memorex Challenge will be done on the NAK's, for sure! We will find out which type of N.R. (or perhaps non) later on.
