Soniphase SL6

Mark, what are you useing for a sub and power for it? You probably told me but I can't remember. What is the internal volume of the sub enclosure? Are you happy with it? I gotta build a sub.

I see what I think is your sub in the corner of one of the pics..

No Subwoofers anymore. I changed the drivers in my altecs from 416-a to Kappa's LF2 which will take alot more power and improved low end response, 30 watt vs 300 watts. The speaker that you see on the left were the subs that I used before and are no longer needed

Kinda like the girlfriend would ask--" Did the earth move for ya Baby?"

Wow, I'm surprised the Kappa do a better job than the 416's. Do they handle the mids as well? Looks like you have some large format mid drivrs, so where are you crossing them....400 hz....500 haz? I think mine are crossed at 800 hz. I've had no problems with the 515's taking the full output from a 700b, but the Linus Array on the other hand can't quite take all the power. he little drivers just don't have the x-max, especially in the power tapered configuration. How low will the Kappas go in the Altecs? I think their fs is 35 hz.. I think the 416 is even lower, but the F3 may be limited by the enclosure size.
I'd love to hear the Soniphase after they completely break in. I'll bet they are outstanding.

The altec's are good to about 40 Hz. Do you have the 515B or 515G. The altec's have great midbass. Crossover to the 311's is at 500 Hz 18db

As we get older a lot of things we wanted to do when we were younger were out of reach. Kids college, house payments and all the other things that curtailed our wants. Now that we are empty nesters we have the resources to dabble in things that we always wanted and it is time to fulfill our wants. My next project is to build a pair of modified Jensen Imperials with dual 15" drivers that I think will sound great with all tube amplification.

And Mark also failed to mention the Jensens are the size of a refrigerator!!!

Skratch..you asked if I had the 515B or G...I think they are the 515G, as they wre made in the 80's I think. To be honest with you I've not had the backs off the speakers to know for sure, but I think the seller told me they were the G model, and I don't think they are as good as the B model..They will take more juice, but I'm thinking they have a higher fs ??

Both the G and B are great speakers. IMHO the G's have better midbass and the B's have better low end. The G's are ferrite magnets and the B's have alnico which lose magnetism over time. I had my 416-a's remagnetized by Bill at Great Plains

He remagnetizes all alnico drivers before he recones them. I'm not sure if you can remagnetize with the cones in ?

Yep, the 416-B drivers in the other pair of A-7's I have have been reconed and re-magnitised by Great Plains. I have another set of 416-B that I want to get remaged and reconed when I ever get around to rebuilding the OTHER pair I have. I have everything to do the pair...just want to fix up the cabs, and repaint them, and have the 416's overhauled, and I would like to take the crossoevers apart and replace the caps in them...I even have the freaking paint...just don't have the motivation to get them done...

Finally got a spectrum analyzer and set up my new speakers. I have no tone controls on my preamp so I have to use an equalizer. To get everything flat I crossed the Soniphase over at 500 Hz and ran the analyzer. Had to take the 3rd and 4th octave down 3db to get them flat. In my basement at -7db on my PLWO 1000 the music was so full and clean that the wife had to close the house up so I didn't wake up the neighbors who are 200 feet away. Going to give them the +3db test this afternoon. Wondering what the Imperials will do with dual 15's in them when I build them
