If doing two layers like that, I might be inclined to do the corners as alternated full lap joints, rather than mitered. It would be stronger and no chance of an air gap.

Then cover the mess in a lovely veneer...

Yes, that's how I do them, alternating lap joints. Two by two's are secured to 4 sides and are behind the front and rear panels and are what they are attached to, and 2 by 4's running full length of all 6 sides near the center of the 6 sides. Quite stout.
 
Lee, do you have your Khorns on wheels?
I like the idea of MDF with simple lap joints. Then lots of drilled holes for screws into 2x4's or 2x2's into every interior corner. Then a exterior layer of birch or perhaps a hardwood top ply like red or white oak glued on top with opposing lap joints. Super strong and hides all the screws.
I'd personally be content with the plywood end grain showing if the plywood had a nice top ply.
Does sound like a nice retirement project. Could probably sell the JBL Millenniums local and cover the cost of the build since I'd use a active crossover and try to make the wooden horns myself. That would be fun.

I guess I’m lucky to have one set made from 3/4’. My speakerlabs k’s are 1/2’ ply Lee
 
Yep, the 3/4 is doable, just have to remember to add 1/4" to everything that needs it.
 
Sooooo.....this is the third woofer of the high powered version the Randy is running.
Q⁰ Called the speaker builder in California and had a pretty good chat. Said he's never seen o ne of his woofs destroyed so quickly....he finally got around to asking what we were running it in.....I told him a Kornerhorn. Loooooooong silence. He said that woofer had wayyyyyyy too much excursion to shove all that air through a 3" X 13" hole, the cones were blown from the compression of the air trying to be blown through the motorboard

Most woofers for horn loaded speakers have a X of between 5 to 8 mm excursion
 
And these are so powerful, the cone was going forward regardless....
 
I had a driver fail in that manner one time. Had them outside for a party and in got very humid as the evening went on. softened the paper and the voice coil parted from the cone. Not nearly as dramatic as that, was able to sim and reglue.
 
What is the X max of the CV woofer he is destroying. Cerwin Vega makes some woofers that have 17 mm travel. I have used CV woofers in Aitec voice of the theater, but I can't remember the model but it came out of a CV double bass horn

Will they replace it at no charge? I blew a 18" CV Musical Instrument Speaker (likely old age) that was doing duty in an Acoustic 301 Folded Horn Cabinet. I set it on the counter at CV (3762 S. Hill St. Los Angeles, CA) and the girl working there took it and came back with a new or refurbished speaker, and just smiled. She never said a word and we just left.
