You could add a trim pot in line but I suspect you have failed/shorted caps somewhere, possibly a voltage regulator on its last leg...

Looking at the input voltage to my capstan motor I am getting 12.8V. Is that too high and why I'm not able to slow it down enough? Could I put a resistor in line to lower the votage? Thoughts?

These EG530AD motors are used on car decks, so they could get 13 or 14V power supply without issues.
Is the speed changing when you adjust the motor trimpot ?

Speed changes but not enough I have a 530AD-2B. Ordered a -2F to see if it is any better. Coming from Nam so it will be a while. End of the month. Going to play around with it and see if anything else might not be working properly. The reverse play is having issues. Just another thing to look at. I worked in electronics for years, not mechanics.

The 2F won't work as it's a CW rotation, you need a CCW motor, like a 2B.

just cancelled it. Reverse play only engages for a second. Head does not turn. (Saw your post on audio Vintage). I'm lost! I had ordered 2 -2B's. Could one be faulty and try the other? Yes, new motor and it plays at the correct speed. Now, the only problem appears to be reverse play.

Maybe something wrong with the solenoid.
The new EG530AD-2B motors are Chinese knockoffs, they're not as good as the original Mabuchi ones.

I really appreciate all of your insights. I found that there is no voltage to the solenoid and I dont have the tools for troubleshooting. It's time to give up I think. Thank you for all of your help. If I do try to tackle it again I'll look forward to checking back in.

Well just looked at the mechanism operation description in the service manual, the direction switching solenoid (green wires) is only activated during forward play.
So that could be a mechanical problem or oxidation of the autoreverse switch.
Anyway it's also good to stop for a time and get back after getting more experience, that's what I've done on the first CT-50R.

Edit : If you test the reverse mode without tape the automatic stop will engages as the right spindle is not spinning (rotation sensor is on the tape counter pulley).

Can't resist looking again. Checked the voltages on pins 1 and 5 (Green wires) to chasis ground. Forward and Reverse read 13V to ground on both pins. Pretty sure one should be ground. I don't like to assume but I'm thinking it should be pin 5 if the symbol with the 12 pointing to 409-1 is the voltage expected at that point. I don't see a discription of what I'm looking at.

Well it seems like the solenoid driver transistor is open.
Check Q609, D609 and R630, also check for cracked solder joints, I've had to deal with many of these on my first one.

Finally got the parts installed. I replaced all 3 triodes and diodes associated with the solenoids. No change. Purchased an o-scope and ther is no output from ic 603 PD4035 pin 33. Not an available item. I guess I have a parts deck unless someone has a source.

13V on both sides of the solenoid means the coil isn't open, might be the wires on the connector, sometimes they get loose.
The pin 33 on the µcom drives the brake/ms solenoid (blue wires), there should be 5V on it during ff/rew modes.
The pin 32 drives the direction solenoid (green wires), 5V in forward play, 0V in reverse play.
These Pioneer specific ic's (PA for analog, PD for digital) aren't easy to find.

I bought a belt kit and it has 3 belts. 1 capstan, 1 tape counter and another that is like the counter belt but smaller. Is there somewhere I cant see that it would go or is it a mistake in the kit?

Another kit seller who don't know about tape decks, there's only two belts in this one.

Thought so! I am happy to announce that after hours upon hours of finding different symptoms, on of the strangest thing being a motor marked ccw was turning the wrong way. (Made one heck of a noise.) I swapped it out and tried for I don't know how long to gt the belt on again. (Did I mention that I'm 69yrs.old and shake pretty badly?) So, after all of that I got the darn thing doing everything it's supposed to. Can't wait to hook it up and hear how it sounds. Thank you 20tajk7 for all of your guidance through this adventure.
