i think tomorrow i just solder phoenix connectors, test points...and a visual...i printed out the diagram from the docs...to compare...i dont have a chassis yet...but, i have time...the other two aint here yet either ...that new solder all of you recommended is very nice...easy to clean...no mess...thanks...
 
And remember, the Phoenix Contact Connectors get soldered into the control board with the wire openings facing down. I messed up the 3 screw ones on my 700 control board build. Had to cut them off with a Dremel cutting disc, extract the leads, then vacuum desolder the through holes.
 
And soldering that 3 screw is a little tight with the other components in the way of the iron. But not too bad. Just keep the iron from making a burn mark on anything.
You can do it!

wasnt so bad....
i seem to have done it and did not burn down the barn....lol
 
finished up the test points and phoenix strips...got the board cleaned....however, i would not have called it dirty....
very nice board....not too difficult for me to understand....\

I guess you have an aversion to R37L/R...

i have the diagram printed out and i am going to inspect the front component side for blunders....some of which i caught and corrected...
and scour the back for soldering technique and errors....
i do feel pretty good about it...i hope i come up empty handed....
a couple of extra eyes here are greatly appreciated....

i dont have a chassis picked out or purchased yet....waiting for my stuff to arrive so i can take inventory and come up with a game plan....
in the mean time....
do i need to cut the wires and put on the control board???
remembering to cut a little extra for the meters to dcp....

or should i start building the back plane....
i am a little worried about this....
i am sure that when i understand the terminology and procedures by doing one or two procedures...i will relax a little...
kinda want to go ahead with this and get it over with....it aint gonna get no better....lol
 
Did you fix R37L/R?

Build the backplanes then attach wires, in that order. That is the order the assembly instructions flow in...

yep....my bad....read it inside the parenthesis...instead of outside as it should have been...
joe, your parts distribution is a very good method...and the bent components a nice touch...
seems you did not leave much to chance....
going to install r 37....
 
ok....i installed the r37 left and right....and checked all polarities ....
all looks good to me....and i see nothing on the back to be concerned about....
this is a full comp install....
and i am missing on the board
1. c20 l/r
2. d15 l/r
3. r39 l/r
all of the rest of the components are installed....
 
Nice job Gene. You know how to solder quite well. You should have no issues with the backplanes. Those 3 components you listed are left out for full complementary operation. I usually solder those holes shut so if in the far future someone doesn't wonder about them.
I held the control board of the amp I'm upgrading and compared it to your photo. All polarities on your board look good. Nice job!
When building the backplanes refer to the instructions. Don't drop any of those tiny gold cups, it'll be lost forever and Joe only includes one extra.
The wire openings for the Phoenix Contact Connectors on the backplanes face up on the 400s. You'll notice doing this with the 3 screw keeps the bias transistor wiring away from the bias transistor legs. If you build a 700 in the future, it's best to reverse it and dress the wiring. Doing so keeps the wiring away from a AC run on the 700s.
 
Why were you dreading it and why are the OFP plugs out of the sockets?
