Phase Linear 400 Repair

I wish I had the eyes and patience to do this stuff. I really want to look into (pardon the pun) Lasik surgery
 
Joe's got a pretty good eye for that stuff and has pointed out some electros I had put in backwards once...it can and does happen..

I sent you an updated photo Brett. Follow the BOM and bag labels for all component references. Things change and the BOM listings and labels are always the most up to date.
 
OK this should be a done board, fingers crossed!!!!! The jumpers are not supposed to be on this one because of the back Plane:
( Important Note: When the PL400 or PL700 Backplane Board RevA or RevB is used, the 3 bus wire jumpers should NOT be installed on the back side of the PL14_20 board.)

Correct, no jumpers when used with backplans. The backplanes provide +/- and grounding for each channel.

At times he'll add components and spaces with some experimenting in mind as well as a later component change. We have played with a lot of different component changes over the years. Some worked out and some less than optimal results. Joe told me once that a SPICE model can predict performance but not how the amp will sound....he counts on the rest of us for that info...

Funny, its not uncommon for the tech manuals like parts and electicals to be a year behind the machine builds for CNC machinery.

I'm getting ready too Ron to look into the Lasik thing as its a bummer always having to put my reading glasses on during work or just reading.

Finally, getting ready to pull the trigger on the back plane purchase. Question, How does the back plane build compare to the control board? Also is it pretty straight forward how the two connect to each other and other components?

I thought that building the backplanes was simpler than building the control board, less components. The only thing was the threaded standoffs and the large area copper traces- you will need a HOT iron for them.

Connections really aren't complicated at all- make sure you get the wiring kit, though, and be careful about how you allocate your wire lengths (I screwed up a bit). There's enough wire included to string everything up.

Don't forget- you will also need the transistors and silpads- order everything at the same time and avoid project pauses.

You have all the other crap, too- right? Variac, dim bulb circuit, and the fuckin' Heyco pliers?

You will need to reroute your AC line in from the strain relief (where it enters the cabinet) to the thermal cutoff at the center point between the backplanes. To do this you will need to remove the strain relief (called a Heyco strain relief) with a specialized tool.

...or you can splice an additional length of wire.

I was going to add a new power cord as the old one is crappy!
 
Mark and Joe, do those look like they'd do the job? I know they're generally expensive but that's a good price. I'd take a gamble on a pair myself if you guys think they'd work.
