I still remember my first one. A Luxman L-85V that I had fixed successfully 4 separate times, and wound up screwing with it long enough I'd blow something else. It sits on a shelf staring at me....all day.....every day.....
I will never let the googly eyed meters of this one get me down. This one will sing. I'm sure of it. One step at a time.

What I'm trying to say is, even though things go well, don't cut corners, always discharge the big caps before working inside, always power down when moving probes around inside....

No such things as bad days, just bad moments

Hey, you had an L-85V too? Mine burnt up a resistor. Was working fine but turned it down to answer the phone but when turned back up, nothing. Warranty ran out and the service tech at the shop I bought it from said Luxman's were odd beasts. He fixed that but it or something else happened again later so I traded it in for a Kenwood Model 600. Cool that you still have yours. Wish I did, not many around.

Thanks for tips. I'm a novice at this and figured that stuff was pretty common sense so I didn't ask. I triple check the caps with my meter, use insulated alligator clips, etc. The big filter caps seem to discharge within a few minutes by themselves. Is that normal? All I have for a big resistor on hand is a 5k 5w wirewound and wasn't sure if that would do it safely.

I think i'm a little behind but the best thing I found for removing the thermal snot is White Vinegar believe it or not. And it really comes off quick. I lay the heatsinks in one of the tinfoil pans for making bread and shit, pour the white vinegar in and let it soak for a minute while I use the acid brush and more vinegar on the back plane. Cheap too.... a buck two ninety eight a gallon. And, it won't go to waste. The douche bag will hold the rest....:pottytrain2::pottytrain2::pottytrain2::sign10:

I got lucky with that. Everything was already cleaned off for me. Someone had already replaced the outputs and used silpads. I opted to replace everything myself as the previous owner had some oddballs mixed in that no one here could identify. You can see them in my pics on the first page. I simply removed the old and replaced with new and new pads. It was working when I got it, but wasn't comfortable with mismatched outputs and unknown drivers. Shiny new thanks to Joe.

2 steps forward, 3 steps back

Well the good news, I got the DC board installed last night. Went smooth. Simple kit and great instructions and pics to go with it. Double, triple, quadruple checked all connections. Plugged it in. Lights on, relay clicked. Rechecked Offset and bias... all is well in Oblivion. Well, so it seems. Got a chance to drag her down to the dirty dungeon I call a garage to hook her up to my thrashed pair of 301's. Hooked up my tablet through my cheesy china tube preamp, which are both daily drivers and POP! Was not expecting that! Definitely no wires crossed, volume all the way down. Checked fuses and one is blown. Whichever channel is on the left looking at the back of the amp. I have to order more fuses before I can go any further. Now what? Am I in over my head here?

No, she's just angry. Time to back up and go over your settings as well as your stuff you hooked up.

Went through everything again. Positive I have all connections correct and no stray strands of wire anywhere. Anyone have any idea why this happened as soon as I hooked up an input? Hoping I didn't blow one of my shiny new outputs.:violent1:

Hooked my inputs (AKA cheesy china preamp and tablet) back up to my Cheesier China Kenwood. I didn't get that cheesy feeling in my pants like when Ms. PL decided to shart out the Brown note. The busted up 301's are alive and well. Any clue as to what might have shit itself?

did you have it up and running before you installed the DCP? Or did you make MANY repairs and then fired it up? As Joe says, do one thing at a time, then you know what MAY have caused it.

I did this one step at a time and checked everything in between. Nothing seemed amiss at all. All was good until I actually tried to apply an input and listen to it. I rechecked all my inputs and my test speakers on another amp. The only Refurb and/ or mods I've done has been posted here.

What fuse? +,- or mains??
I didn't have any time last night to pop her open and look. I get up at 3 am for work. It was the + (5agx). Red wire from the supply caps. I had tor order fuses and will be a couple of days since I can't find any local, but not sure if it is a good idea to just pop another in her and see what happens. Sounds like poking and hoping to me. Where do I go from here? Is it advisable to go through the outputs and check to see if any are fried? Also, any idea what this guy is lurking above the caps hanging onto the - supply? Thoughts, opinions, a kick in the nuts for taking on this project ? Go ahead. Let me have it.
